D&D: Five Ways To Make Your Tiefling Hellishly Good

Want to lean into the infernal side of Tieflings a little bit more? Here are some ways you can be a little more devilish.

Tieflings feature heavily in Baldur’s Gate 3, and with players completing/ragequitting their honour mode runs and looking for more at the gaming table, you can be sure those horned, colorful weirdos with the power of the nine hells coursing through them, will soon be coming to an adventuring party near you.

Especially since now players have cause to imagine them more vividly than before. Nothing like having a full on character creator to fuel the D&D new character envy. But when you’re rolling up that brand new Tiefling, and you’re itching to be just a little bit more of a Hellion, we’ve got you covered.

Magic Initiate: Warlock

As a Tiefling, you automatically get the ability to cast Hellish Rebuke once per long rest, owing to your “Infernal Legacy.” But you can play that up even more with a little bit of hellish magic to your arsenal. And one of the easiest ways to do that, regardless of your class is to pick up the Magic Initiate feat. Taking the Warlock option gives you access to some of the more infernal options out there, including Armor of Agathys, a plane connected to the Nine Hells.

This not only gives you an icy layer of temporary hit points that cause damage to anyone attacking you, it lets you call upon the chill of the underworld for dramatic effect.

Scion of the Outer Planes

Another option for playing a more infernal than usual Tiefling is to take the Scion of the Outer Planes feat out of the new Planescape setting book. Of course, you’ll want to get your DM’s approval before you pick it up, but it’s easily accessible via the two new backgrounds introduced in the book. With it, you can take the Evil Outer Plane or Lawful Outer Plane options. Both of which get you a cantrip, and then later, set you up for one of the later Feats in the chain, most especially…

This feat is literally about channeling the cosmic forces of evil to gain a benefit. Using the infernal powers of the multiverse, you can deal extra necrotic damage on any hit that not only damages your enemy but heals you. Alongside this, you get to increase one of your Stats by 1. So you keep increasing your power while also having the ability to drain your enemies’ vitality to supplement your own.

Divine Soul Sorcery

Alright, so nobody said necessarily which Divinity would spark the glimmering within your soul that awakens your magic power. Divine Soul Sorcerers are often touched by the gods, but they aren’t necessarily the good ones. Choose an affinity for Evil or Law and you’ll gain a spell that fits in line with these inclinations, as well as the ability to heal your allies at higher levels.

Fiend Warlock

Finally, one last means of playing up the infernal powers of your Tiefling is to play a Warlock who’s made an Infernal Pact. This one might be a little bit obvious, but you don’t have to take more than a level or two to give yourself an even greater flavoring of infernal powers. At first level, you’ll start gaining temporary hit points whenever you reduce a creature to 0 hit points. And with just one more level you’ll have the best cantrip attack in the game with Agonizing Blast and whatever else you decide to take.
