Games Workshop is adding a few new categories to Armies on Parade for 2024. That means even more ways to enter and join the fun!

The annual painting competition from Games Workshop, Armies on Parade, has four new categories this year: Individual, Team, Display Board, and Youngbloods. Now you’ve got until September/October to get to work on your entries. But first, let’s discuss what each of these categories are so you can decide which one you want to go for.

via Warhammer Community

Individual

“paint up and submit any army from any game system on a blank battle board or table. It’s all about the army, so no terrain is required.”

To clarify, that should say “entries can be from any Warhammer game system, or the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game” — not just any game system. It’s a GW event and they did clarify that later.

The removal of terrain is a change from previous years where your entry needed to be on a maximum of a 2′ x 2′ space. You no longer need to create a Display Board or scene for your army. Personally, I like this change as it allows a LOT more folks to enter just their army. But if you want to do the whole Display Board thing…don’t worry, we’re getting to that.

Team

The Team entries are the same as individual in terms of requirements. Paint and submit any army from any game system on a blank battle board or table. However, this division is for groups who want to work together on a single entry.

“It could be two friends painting a combined force, a family working together, a whole team painting a unit each, or maybe a big community, each contributing a single miniature!”

Display Board

“The Display Board category is for those who want to exercise their terrain-making and diorama muscles. You can also enter this category on top of entering the Individual or Team categories.”

This harkens back to previous years for folks who really want to go all out. And just for clarification, GW also listed the display sizes:

“The display must fit within a board with base dimensions of 2’x2’ (61cm x 61cm) or 22×30 inches (76cm x 56cm)”

Youngblood

This category is exclusive to 13 to 16-year-olds and does require consent of a parent or guardian to enter. Additionally, Teams of Youngbloods may also enter the team category as long as there’s at least one person over the age of 16 as part of the group. This would be perfect for a school Warhammer club with a teacher that’s organizing the team.

Dates To Be Announced

“The exact dates are still to be confirmed, but Warhammer stores will run their finales during September, while the online Armies on Parade awards show will take place in October. “

As always, if you’re interested in more details be sure to check out the Terms and Conditions page — which isn’t quite up yet. It will be available in April. However, GW did put out some precursory info to get you started which you can read here.

I’m not quite sure why GW hasn’t locked down the event dates or hammered out the T&Cs just yet. They’ve been doing this for a while but maybe the additional categories threw a wrench in their plans. Legal stuff can take some time for these things.

Anyhow, I’m looking forward to seeing all the cool entries this year. If you are working on an entry you can use the hashtag #ArmiesonParade2024 on the relevant social media to share it. Good luck to all the folks entering!
