Check out our spotlight on Magic community creators! This week we talked to Daniel from Everything Spell Slinging.

Welcome in Praetors and Planeswalkers! One of my favorite things about Commander is the rich community of creators, influencers, and players that have formed around it. YouTube, Twitch, and podcast influencers all provide a unique perspective on the game, whether through playing, deck tech, or just general banter. Creators like these are usually the first introduction players have to the game; they play a huge part in promoting and growing the community. If you love EDH, you probably have a creator to thank. This series is designed to shine a light on some of those brilliant creators.

This week, we’re talking to Daniel from Everything Spell Slinging. Daniel is a common guest across multiple content creators, as well as a YouTube personality in his own right. Perhaps what he’s best known for, however, is his music and video creations. He is a kind, bright light in the EDH community, and every table is better when he sits down to play.

How Long Have You Been Playing Magic?

I started playing Magic around Mirrodin and Fifth Dawn, or at least, sentient! For that, my mother showed me all sorts of cards and gifted me an Alliance Force of Will when I was 7. Of course, I had no way of knowing how busted it was. However, it made me fall in love with the game, which I still hold dear 27 years later. So much so that I can take time in my work to actually work on events, content, or other aspects of Magic!

What Drew You to the Game?

The art, the design, and my awesome mother teaching me the game. Also, I thrive in situations and places where loads of like-minded people meet, and the gathering is huge. I love it! It makes me feel at home, and it’s somewhere I can be myself!

How Long Has Your Channel Been Around?

I started this February, after MCPhilly sparked me with so much inspiration! I took up being a guest on the first shows that gave me a spot (The Jund Fund & Trying Casually Games). It evolved over the year to what it is now, and I am ready to take it even further 😀

What Makes Your Channel Unique?

I think it’s puns, my sense of love, and wanting to help the US / EU Magic community, and a never-ending enthusiasm for the game! I just love this game so much, and you will always see that on my channel!

What Advice Do You Have for Up and Coming Content Creators?

Don’t think! DO! I have been in my mind for the longest time, coming from a 12-year-long music career where insecurity is killing creative flow. I let more things go than I made eventually. I taught myself to stop thinking and just do it (Yes Shia might be right).

What’s Your Favorite Set?

Ravnica: City of Guilds. My stepdad met my mom over a Temple Garden. My mother was married to a very abusive man at the time. I was out a lot and just moved to a new city. There, in the local LGS, I met a man named Alex! We became friends; he was my mother’s age, a bit younger. We started going to FNM, and in our first draft (RAV), he opened the temple. He got three shocks that draft! Later, he drove me home, my mom opened the door, and I told her about the shocks as a young man I was. However, the Planeswalker spark jumped over between my mom and Alex! He gifted her the garden! They still have it! 🙂 Still together and still playing Magic!

Which Commander is Your Favorite and Why?

I am totally in love with so many commanders, but nothing comes close to my love for Talion, The Kindly Lord. A blue, black 3/4 flying with an insane unique effect. It lets me play a very unsettling control and kill on sight package! Also, the landbase is what I would like to call “My Chemical Manabase.” Every Dimir double land has a super emo band sounding sad name and matches perfectly with my Spotify Wrapped of 2023!
