MTG: EDH is having a big shakeup this week. After a meteoric rise, Mer-cules has been sent to the fish market, and the dragon is back in the running.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.

EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

The Raptor King is still going strong in the top spot, and it seems no one can take him down. Discover is proving to be one of the strongest new mechanics, and Pantlaza is the best at making it pop. Look for more ridiculousness once Ravnica’s big stompy buff spells drop.

Tymna the Weaver

Tymna has had a meteoric rise this week, going from clawing back all the way up to the second spot. Her ease of slotting into almost any color combo and providing fast card advantage makes her one of the best partner Commanders on the market. I wonder how she’ll hold up after this weekend.

Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice

The deadly Phyrexian angel has also jumped up a few spots, and frankly, well-deserved. Simic and Selesnya are about to bring a lot of power to this playstyle, and the recent rumors of Clues giving poison counters are making proliferate even scarier. I can’t wait to see her go crazy.

The Ur-Dragon

I knew it wouldn’t be long before the Dragon king was back in action. He’s just too good, with too much utility, and there are so many ways to make your nastiest stuff INTO a Dragon these days. I wonder how long he’ll hold this spot, though.

Gishath, Sun’s Avatar

Gisath has finally been unseated, but he’s not defeated. Power gaming is still a thing, and Gishath doesn’t mess around with fancy tricks and keywords. If you just want to stomp a hole in the battlefield, Gishath is the way to go.

What are your thoughts on this week’s commanders?
