Goatboy here, and it continues to be Codex Dark Angels week.  Bring out your incense, dust off your robes, and keep your secrets.  It’s time to rate the new Dark Angels detachments.

Which one of the three is the most Dank Dark you could imagine? Are we going to see some of these in the upcoming top-8 events or are we still living in the shadows of Space Marine Vanguard nonsense, and vehicle parking lots? -Lets dig in.

The Dark Angels codex has three detachments in the book – the Unforgiven Task Force, the Inner Circle Task Force, and the Company of Hunters.  The Unforgiven one appears to be the one from the Index, so while it isn’t burning things down, we do know how that one works.  Overall, it isn’t too bad as it just adds two more detachments to Marines due to the fact that the initial one is just an update to that already existing option.  Either way, let’s rank them.

#1 – Inner Circle Task Force (aka Deathwing)

This Deathwing in all but name, detachment is number one as it’s probably the most usable detachment from the new book.  With a new boxed set release that is all about this group of models it makes sense to make this Detachment good.  It pushes the idea of making the Terminators tough, gives them some movement options, and is just overall a powerful option for those wanting to run the chunky boys.  I really like the overall rule, too, as you pick an objective each turn to be your Vowed objective, which gives you some stratagems and rules you can use when targeting things on it.  This is a very fluffy way to give the idea that these guys are on a mission to wreck something each turn and take them back to their stronghold for questioning.

#2 – Company of Hunters (aka Ravenwing)

This detachment is in second place just because it gives you different options that the regular Unforgiven isn’t currently doing for the game.  This detachment activates Outriders as a Battleline choice which is a pretty cool little rule update!  It also lets you always advance/fallback and shoot, which is pretty cool for an army full of bikes with some decent weapons.  You can easily have your Outriders, your Ravenwing Knights and your Ravenwing command squad always moving and shooting your opponent throughout the game.  I don’t know how powerful this all is. The regular Marine White Scars detachment might be better, but this is an interesting army to try and build around.  You are going to be constantly moving, blocking, zipping around, and hopefully putting in damage as you whittle your opponent down.

#3 – Unforgiven Task Force (aka “Greenwing”)

I find this one to just not work. Trying to get into Battleshocked state is something you don’t always control.  A lot of the Detachment rules activate off being in that state, and since you can’t force it or change it – it makes it hard to really build around.  I like the Detachment’s concept, but Battleshocked is just not working as well as we would want it to.  Thus, this makes the Unforgiven Taks Force the “worst” detachment, as you would rather just pick one of the regular Marine options instead of this one.

I think we’ll see someone play a Terminators Dark Angels list this upcoming tournament season and we’ll see if it works well.  I hope it does, as it is an easy army to build up. You get everything you need to start in the new Dark Angels boxed set, and we all got some Leviathan Terminators to play with, too.

Are you wanting to play with Terminators this next year? The Unforgiven Beckon!
