Deathwing Assault is coming to pre-order this weekend. Will this be an army in a box? Time to check those points.

With the Dark Angels next on deck to get a new codex Games Workshop has packaged a new army box for them. I was looking at this box and thinking “Hey, this could be a really nice way to start a new army of Dark Angels.” Plus a Deathwing themed army is a pretty straightforward affair. Bring on the terminators and let them do the heavy lifting. But how many points are actually in the box? Let’s find out!

We’re using the current points from the Munitorum Field Manual. The may shift once the codex comes out but since these are available to everyone to check our math we’re going with these. But even if the points do shift these should get us at least in the same ballpark.

Deathwing Assault Points Breakdown

Belial = 85 points

5x Deathwing Knights = 235 points

10x Terminators = 200 points for 5 or 400 points for 10

Points Total: 720

So, based on the current points, we’re looking at 720 points. Now that’s not counting any points for specific Detachments or upgrades. That said, for the models and the “beef” they bring this is a nice chunk of an army. So how would I fill this out?

Personally, I think you’ve really got two options here. Either use this as a core for a well balanced force or lean into the Deathwing and just stick to terminators/terminator armor. While I’d like to splash some Ravenwing in here for some speed, I kinda want to stick to the Deathwing theme and just go with that.

We also don’t know the Detachment options in the new Codex either. However, I’m betting we’re going to see an “All Deathwing, All The Time” option in the book. So, with that in mind, here’s what I’d propose for next steps.

First, I’d snag the Lion for this list. I know he’s not technically in Terminator Armor but you know what…that model is good and he’s the freakin’ Primarch. I’ll make an exception. Plus, he’s 380 points which quickly shoots us up to a total of 1100. For another quick 400 points let’s just drop in another squad of 10 terminators. Now we’re at 1500 points.

Like this, but Deathwing colors…

From there, I almost want to toss in a Deathwing Strike Master. He’s a “Lieutenant” so that should be fine. Plus he’s 80 points. Just to round things out, why not bring a full 10 man Deathwing Command Squad for 420 points. Boom, that’s another 500 point brick done and brings our grand total up to 2000.

Now, again, before you rush off to buy all of these models or anything keep in mind that these points are subject to change when the codex comes out. Additionally, you should DEFINITELY check to see if there’s a Deathwing Detachment option to make sure we’re not stepping on the toes of the Force Org chart here. But, should this work out, we’ve got the following:

Lion El’Jonson = 380

Belial = 85

Deathwing Strike Master = 80

10x Deathwing Command Squad = 420

10x Terminators = 400

10x Terminators = 400

5x Deathwing Knights = 235

Total: 2000

Now that’s a nice round 2000 points of Terminator Pain! It’s 37 models in Terminator Armor plus a Primarch. We’ll see if points cuts are in order as we have zero wiggle room but that’s one mean looking brick of stuff coming at the enemy.

Now, you might want to consider splitting the Terminators into 5 man squads just to have some tactical flexibility to snag objectives. The points are the same either way. Still, that looks like a durable list even if it’s pretty slow getting around. It’s not like they can teleport or anything…

Deathwing Assault is going up for pre-order this weekend. Enjoy the beef that is Terminator Armor!
