Let’s talk shop about the upcoming Bretonnian Core Set and figure out what sort of a deal we’re getting with this boxed set.

Games Workshop is releasing Warhammer: The Old World in an interesting way with the two core sets that include 1250 point armies. Today, we’re tackling the Bretonnian box to figure out if we can determine a pricing breakdown for the contents. This one is going to be a little tricky…

Bretonnian Core Set Pricing Breakdown

Contents:

  • Bretonnia Battle Standard on Royal Pegasus – $65 (Lord On Pegasus)
  • Bretonnia Pegasus Knights $60
  • 12x Bretonnian Knights ???
  • 36x Bretonnian Men-at-Arms ???
  • 24x Bretonnian Peasant Bowmen ???
  • Dice, Templates, Waterslide Transfers ???
  • Warhammer: The Old World Core Rulebook = $70

Total Price: $255

Okay, so far the known price of the contents is $195 but we still have quite a bit unaccounted for.  The main units in the box (the Knights, Men-at-Arms, Bowmen) are unknown prices which makes this a tough case to solve. The Templates are a weird one but we know a price for them at $15 thanks to Legions Imperialis. They are listed as “Universal Markers” so that is actually a known amount, too. The dice and waterslide transfers are still unknown but considering there’s a scatter die in there that costs $1.50 it’s safe to assume those aren’t free. Just for the sake of simplicity we’re going to make that lot cost $25 — that’s including the templates, dice, and waterslide transfers as a bundle.

  • Dice, Templates, Waterslide Transfers $25 (estimated)

That still leaves the units. When those units were available in Warhammer Fantasy they were priced around $30. However, the amounts in the boxes varied from the quantities listed here. For example, the Bowmen came in a box of 16. This set includes an additional rank of them. The Men-at-Arms also came in a box of 16 miniatures. Now, you’re getting 36 in the core set. Knights of the Realm came in a box of 8 and now you’re getting 12 of them.

What we can tell for sure is that those are the same sprues as previous incarnations. Which means how GW has to package them is based on the old sprues.  So, for example, the Knights came four to a sprue so that means you’re getting 3 sprues worth of Knights. And if two sprues worth of Knights was $30, then it stands to reason that three sprues is roughly $45.  And we can extrapolate that out for the rest of the units. I’ll save you the text and just put our best guesses below.

  • Knights = $45 (estimated 3 sprues worth)
  • Men-at-Arms = $75 (estimated, 4.5 sprues worth)
  • Bowmen = $45 (estimated, 3 sprues worth)

Now, we could also round those off to the next ten dollar amount to account for “inflation” and you get $50 and $80. I think those are reflective of modern GW pricing. Now, that doesn’t mean these units will ship that way if they ever get a stand alone release again. We might see GW repackage these units just like their previous incarnations. Who knows. We also know the pricing of these units will change from their old price thanks to the Pegasus Knight price point. The truth of the matter is that GW is going to set these prices to whatever they want. But at least we’ve got an estimate based on their previous amounts even if those prices are 20 years old.

  • Bretonnia Battle Standard on Royal Pegasus – $65 (Lord On Pegasus)
  • Bretonnia Pegasus Knights $60
  • 12x Bretonnian Knights $50
  • 36x Bretonnian Men-at-Arms $80
  • 24x Bretonnian Peasant Bowmen $50
  • Dice, Templates, Waterslide Transfers $25
  • Warhammer: The Old World Core Rulebook = $70

Total Estimated Individual MSRP: $400

Total Price: $255

Total Savings: $145

Until we get some official pricing that’s going to be our best guess. And even if we’re off a bit you can see that the total value in the box is still going to be more than core set price point. Also, this is a playable 1250 point army right out of the box. I think that’s a pretty nice touch.

So what do you think of the Bretonnian Core Set? Do you think it’s worth the price?
