From the makers of the Alien RPG comes a dark sci-fi RPG all about exploration and mystery: Coriolis: The Great Dark.

Free League, publishers of the ALIEN RPG, as well as Tales from the Loop, Mutant: Year Zero, and Blade Runner: the Roleplaying Game, are back with a new game. Coriolis: The Great Dark promises to be a “spiritual sequel” to Coriolis: The Third Horizon, Free League’s first sci-fi RPG, depending on your definition of “sci-fi RPG” as it came out after Mutant: Year Zero and Tales from the Loop.

But, way back in 2017, which is three years shy of being a decade ago now, Coriolis: The Third Horizon won the Judges Spotlight at the ENnie Awards. It made waves with its updates of the Year Zero Engine and imaginative setting. Now, Coriolis: The Great Dark promises a fresh take on the setting and the kinds of play you’ll get up to. Let’s take a look.

Coriolis: The Great Dark – Coming to Kickstarter in March

In the teaser trailer above, you get a glimpse of some art that is very evocative of Dune and Alien. That is a Spacing Guild hat if ever there was one. But don’t let that color your expectations. Pitched as The Terror meets Deadwood but in space, which we all know is the only place left that hasn’t been corrupted by capitalism, Coriolis: The Great Dark seems like it will focus especially on undertaking journeys through desolate regions of space.

We are incredibly excited and proud to announce Coriolis: The Great Dark, our brand-new science fiction roleplaying game about exploration, mysteries, and intrigue at the far edge of space. Venture out into the unknown on mighty Greatships, delve deep into ancient ruins and partake in the Byzantine schemes of powerful guilds.

Coriolis: The Great Dark will be launched on Kickstarter March 19. Inspired by 19th century polar expeditions, deep sea diving and pulp archeology, Coriolis: The Great Darkoffers a new take on sci-fi roleplaying that emphasizes mystery, a sense of wonder and breathtaking visuals.

– Free League Press Release

You’ll be playing as explorers in forgotten star systems, where a fledgling human civilization escaped to the “frontier” of deep space. Of course, out there are long-lost ruins, ancient space gods, and more. In the press release, Free League played up the idea of the dark wonder and mystery of deep space.

This sequel to Coriolis — The Third Horizon showcases an all-new setting and mechanics – with a focus on exploration, a sense of wonder, sci-fi action, and faction intrigue. The rules include explorer generation, combat, exploration, and expeditions.

Alongside the new book will be a boxed campaign setting, The Flowers of Algorab, which is also part of the Kickstarter.

Coriolis: The Great Dark comes to Kickstarter on March 19th.
