The two former enemies team up to fight some even bigger monsters in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Godzilla vs Kong is a campy romp with plenty of giant monsters fighting while wrecking cities. There are no excess, time-eating scenes filled with exposition. The story gives what you need to know when you need to know it, and added background information doesn’t get in the way of the ride. Is it the best movie ever? No. Is it even in the top 5 Godzilla movies? No. But it is a great popcorn movie you can enjoy without feeling tired at the end.

Its hybrid release during the tail end of the pandemic closures led to record streaming numbers, so of course, we’re getting more.

New Trailer

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire starts not too long after the last movie. Instead of more infighting, the duo band together to fight against a new, mysterious red ape that wants to wipe humanity off the map. Kong and Godzilla have experienced some upgrades since we last saw them. Along with their newfound alliance, the giant lizard has gone from emitting blue energy to pink, and Kong has some new weaponry… and a kid.

This new trailer focuses on the human element of the story – a girl who’s connected to a power that frightens even the two giants. That mysterious red ape is just the start of their problems. Something bigger is hidden beneath the ice of Hollow Earth.

Humans going to places they shouldn’t? Check. Monsters smashing cities? Check. Lots of CG? Check. Stupid but fun? I sure hope so.

There’s a bit of a truce — Godzilla’s in control of the surface world and Kong is down in Hollow Earth. It wasn’t, ‘Okay, give me a call when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will rush to the rescue!

The buddy-cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong. My influences are always embedded with the ‘80s, and the ‘80s were prime for [that] storyline. There’s a lot of misunderstanding – the way that the monsters communicate isn’t straightforward.”
