MTG: Sheldon Menery Gives Us a Final Gift in ‘Sheldon’s Spellbook’
The Godfather of Commander is bringing us some of his favorite cards, both as a memory of a beloved figure and to benefit a good cause.
Welcome in, Praetors and Planeswalkers! If you’ve been in the Commander scene for any length of time, I’m sure you know about Sheldon Menery. A Level 5 Judge and a high-level member of the Commander Rules Committee, Menery was a powerhouse in the gaming world and a beloved friend to all who knew him. Sadly, he passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer in September of 2023. His memory was honored with a special display at MagicCon Las Vegas, showcasing a video interview he’d given from his home. He was a giant in the community and is dearly missed.
In his honor, Wizards of the Coast partnered with the American Cancer Society for a special Secret Lair release. This limited-run product, titled “Sheldon’s Spellbook,” contains cards handpicked by Menery with gorgeous updated art, some featuring Sheldon himself.
Capturing a Legacy
WotC put a lot of thought into this collection, with no small amount of guidance from Sheldon before his death. Here’s what Wizards had to see about the release:
Sheldon was actively involved in choosing the cards and the art in this very special collection. It showcases some of his favorite cards and those that reflect his style of play in non-foil and rainbow foil. Select cards even feature artwork with his likeness.
In collaboration with Sheldon, the American Cancer Society was chosen as the beneficiary of this philanthropic Secret Lair drop, and 50% of the product price will be donated to the organization to help fight cancer.

What’s in the Box?
The “Sheldon’s Spellbook” Secret Lair features seven cards, each with glorious updated art and new flavor text. These are cards Menery was particularly fond of, and they are great additions to any Commander deck. It includes Command Tower, Sol Ring, Inkshield, Eladamri’s Vineyard, and Teferi’s Protection. In addition, you’ll get Bene Supremo, an Italian rewording of Greater Good, and Sheldon, the Commander, a reskin of Ruhan of the Fomori. The set will be available in both regular print and Rainbow Foil treatment.
