This week, a deadly debutante from the Cult of Rakdos has danced her way into the Top Five, and a mighty wolf howls to the top.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.

EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.

Voja, Jaws of the Conclave

The mighty Wolf of Selesnya has shot up to the top spot, thanks in no small part to a week with the new MKM cards. His field-wide buff ability is proving to be a nasty equalizer, and I’m sure he’ll keep his fangs in the top spot for a long time.

Tymna the Weaver

Tymna has fallen behind the wolf, but she’s still solidly Top Three. Her unique postcombat effect, combined with the partner ability letting you tailor your deck to whatever colors you like, let her stand out from the pack. I’m hoping they’ll bring partner back at some point to expand her options.

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

Pantlaza maintains the third spot, and rightfully so. Discover is pretty strong, and I’m sticking to my guns that the Fallout decks will be a reawakening for him. Until then, he can sit confidently in the knowledge that he’s the new “go-to” Dinosaur Commander.

Judith, Carnage Connoisseur

Rising up from the underbelly of Ravnica, Judith’s latest form makes for a nasty Rakdos spellslinger deck. By giving all your Red and Black spells deathtouch and lifelink, you can knock out the board with something as simple as Blazing Volley and gain a ton of life in the process. I’ll honestly be surprised if Judith doesn’t jump up in the coming weeks.

The Ur-Dragon

The Ur-Dragon refuses to die, holding the last spot valiantly in the face of all the updates. I’m not sure if Fallout will be kind to him, but maybe Thunder Junction will.

What are your thoughts on this week’s commanders?
