After what feels like an eternity in development, The Crow reboot is finally making it to theaters this summer.

The franchise is based on the gritty comic by James O’Barr, who wrote it as a way to deal with his fiancee’s death at the hand of a drunk driver. The story follows Eric Draven and his fiancee, Shelly. The couple are brutally assaulted by a gang of thugs and die as a result of their injuries. But, the young man is given a chance at revenge by a crow who brings him back and acts as his guide on his new, violent path.

The first big-screen adaptation, released in 1994, was steeped in tragedy. Its star, Brandon Lee, was fatally wounded by a prop firearm on set before filming was complete. A stunt double, CG, and script rewrites were implemented to complete the project. The movie opened at number one and became an instant cult classic.

It was followed by three more movies, a television series, as well as numerous novels and comic books. It also spawned a video game and CCG.

The reboot has been in development since 2008 and has gone through multiple directors and writers. It’s been a long, drawn-out process to get here. Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, and Jason Momoa were all cast as Eric Draven at various points in development.

The version being released stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs as Shelly. Director Rupert Sanders (2017’s Ghost in the Shell) was attached in 2022; filming began the same year. Its script was penned by Zach Baylin (Creed III). A bit of a mixed bag of good and really bad.

The producers released a statement reassuring long-time fans that they’re handling the franchise with care and that this movie is everything they’ve been waiting for.

“We appreciate what The Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology. To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.

The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on. We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.”

I really like the cast, but I don’t have a lot of hope that the movie will live up to what that list promises. We’ve done this several times already. At least it’s not being made by Sony?
