After a three-year wait, the nostalgia-filled first trailer for X-Men ’97 is finally here. It’s got the look, the music, and some familiar voices.

X-Men: The Animated Series ran from 1992-1997 for five seasons on Fox Kids. Along with Batman: The Animated Series, it was a gateway to the world of comics for a lot of Millenials. It had a mix of original stories and adaptations of plots by Chris Clairmont, Stan Lee, and Louise Simonson. The creators didn’t totally dumb it down for kids. Along with battles with Magneto and the Sentinels, it covered topics like divorce, the Holocaust, and the AIDS crisis. The series ended with Prof. Charles Xavier’s death.

You can watch the full run on Disney+ now.

New Series, Classic Look

X-Men ’97 series picks up where the original series dropped off. The team has to keep Xavier’s goal – of a world where mutants aren’t persecuted – alive after his death. In the first trailer, anti-mutant protests continue, armed forces prepare for battle, and an old frenemy takes a new role.

“We have to say vigilant; the professor entrusted us with his dream.” – Cyclops

The animated series brings back a lot of the voice cast (including Cal Dodd as Wolverine) and the epic opening music. The series also brings back the original’s Jim Lee inspired animation style with a few modern tweaks.
