The Dawnbringer Crusades might secured two new cities but did they check the foundations? An old threat returns to power in Age of Sigmar.

Did you catch the latest trailer for the upcoming Warhammer: Age of Sigmar reveals this week? It’s all happening at AdeptiCon 2024. That said, this last teaser really let the RAT out of the bag…

Guess Who’s Back

The clues are right there in the video and in the article from WarCom. First up, we’ve got Green Lightning. Next, did you listen to the sounds from the video? Sure sounds like the chittering of rats to me. Furthermore the title of the article uses the words “Foul Powers Fulminate” — The Skaven are considered pretty foul due to being Rat-men and Fulminate can mean to explode violently or flash like lightning.

Also, that “well” they covered up sure looks like something else when you light it with green lightning…

The text also uses a couple more references which I’m just going to list here:

  • the bells of ruin toll – aka the Screaming Bell of the Skaven
  • vile has been festering – again, a nod to the Skaven association with rats and disease.
  • emerald energy crackles in the depths – Warp Lightning and other Warp-stone machines.

Skaven really have been in the background (or maybe the underground) for a long time. When AoS first kicked off, they had joined Chaos as the Horned Rat was attempting to swipe Slaanesh’s vacant throne from the Chaos Pantheon. But it seems like that storyline eventually let go. More recently Slaanesh is back and the Skaven took a backseat in the Mortal Realms. They did go about and mess with Nagash’s grand plan and inadvertently spared everyone from the full effects of Nagash’s Necroquake. But since then…they’ve haven’t been major players.

Looking at their releases, they haven’t gotten a lot of attention either. Sure we’ve gotten a couple Warbands and a character or two. But for such a massive range they really could use some more attention. Maybe that’s GW’s plan. We could be in for a new Skaven update/wave of miniatures and refreshed. That said, we’ll find out soon enough with the AdeptiCon Previews happening this week.

We’ve got Rat-sign. You might want to call the exterminator.
