Wyrmworks Publishing launched a milestone project: it published the D&D 5E SRD in braille, marking a new first for the venerable fantasy RPG.

This past Friday, Wyrmworks Publishing released a braille conversion of D&D’s 5th Edition SRD. This feat marks the first time that D&D has been published in Braille. While there are audio formats, making the 2014 core rules accessible to visually impaired audiences, Wyrmworks’ project is the first-ever braille conversion.

Alongside the accessible rules, there is a step-by-step tutorial that guides creators and other publishers through the braille transcription process. According to their announcement, all of this is just the beginning.

Wyrmworks Publishing, a leading advocate for inclusivity and accessibility in tabletop gaming, is proud to announce the release of a groundbreaking product: the 5e System Reference Document (SRD) transcribed into braille format. This marks the first time in the history of tabletop roleplaying games that the core rules of any edition have been made available in braille, a significant milestone in enhancing accessibility within the gaming community.

With a commitment to breaking down barriers and opening doors for players and developers alike, Wyrmworks Publishing offers this transcription free of charge in BRF format for digital braille readers and physical embossers, as well as BBZ format for editing with the free BrailleBlaster software. Released under the CC-BY-4.0 license, this transcription empowers anyone to utilize it according to their needs, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in tabletop gaming.

And if you go and check out the project page, you’ll find a tutorial guide to using BrailleBlaster, which uses the default settings that Wyrmworks developed in their project. Wyrmworks employs a team of braille readers to review that formatting, and using these guides, hopes that other creators will be able to “confidently use the software to make their content available to more people.”

Because this is just a first step, Wyrmworks Publishing is committed to “creating a more inclusive TTRPG landscape.” This means that in the future, Wyrmworks will release more tutorials. The pulbisher will also convert its library of previous titles into braille, and more. As Wyrmworks puts it, “our ultimate dream is to make affordable, on-demand physical braille and embossed image printing a reality for the entire TTRPG industry.”
