So you want to do some crimes. You’re going to need a crew, and they’re going to need tools. Tools like these five spells perfect for crimes.

If you want to pull off a heist you need many things. Intel. A plan. And most importantly the tools and the talent to get the job done. And like anything in D&D, that all comes down to magic.

So here are five spells for the perfect heist. Whatever crime you’re trying to do, these can help.

Invisibility

Let’s start with the most obvious one. Invisibility is the perfect spell for doing crimes because it’s hard to get caught when they can’t see you. Evade guards, escape notice, if they’re never on alert, they’ll never come chasing after you.

Or if you do get caught, you’re just one quick turn away from vanishing, seemingly into thin air. And with Invisibility, you get a whole hour at least.

Misty Step

Need to get into the most secure locations but not sure if you can pick a lock or scale the wall? Misty Step is about to be your new best friend. This low-level spell is a quick teleport. Sure it’ll only take you up to 30 feet, but that’s enough to get you inside most buildings. You do have to be able to see where you’re going, but there are plenty of ways around that.

Mage Hand

Why get your hands dirty at all? With Mage Hand, you can use a magical invisible hand to get it all accomplished instead. Mage hand will let you pick things up from afar (if they’re relatively light). And the more accomplished Arcane Trickster Rogues can do sleight of hand with it, so you can pick someone’s pocket from around the corner.

Rope Trick

One of the trickiest things about heists is waiting for the right time. With Rope Trick you have the perfect way to create time. Sneak in during quiet hours, or at a time when no one is looking, then use Rope Trick for the perfect, undetectable hidey-hole that can last up to 8 hours.

Pull the rope up behind you and disappear into an extra-dimensional pocket of reality. When the time is right, you and your crew can slip down, ready to steal whatever it is you’re after.

Find Familiar

Finally, Find Familiar is the ultimate scouting spell. All it takes is 10 gold pieces and the ability to cast ritual spells. But for that little investment, you can basically get access to a remote-controlled drone. Only it’s a magical spirit that takes the shape of a normal beast.

Summon a spider familiar and send it scuttling, all but unnoticed, into the tiniest cracks. You can be a literal fly on the wall in unauthorized places. You can even cast spells through your familiar if you’re close enough. Or see and hear through their eyes and ears.

Just make sure you’ve got someone to watch your back while you do so.

Happy adventuring!
