Dune: Part Two has taken over theaters, and fans are clamoring to see Paul’s story play out. Is Dune 3 in the cards?

The sequel brought in $81.5 million domestically and $178.5M worldwide over its first weekend. It was the largest opening weekend since Barbenhammer last summer. Before they ran out of seats to sell, IMAX theaters alone raked in $18.5 million of the box office take. And it’s got weeks to go.

Surprising no one, Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode told CNBC that the studio is interested in finishing out the trilogy with Dune 3.

“We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision. I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not.”

As ready as fans may be, director Denis Villeneuve isn’t in a rush to return to Arrakis – he has a full dance card. He told The Hollywood Reporter

“I have four projects on the table, currently. One of them is a secret project that I cannot talk about right now, but that needs to see the light of day quite quickly. So it would be a good idea to do something in between projects, before tackling Dune Messiah and Cleopatra. All these projects are still being written, so we’ll see where they go, but I have no control over that.”

More importantly, he doesn’t want to sacrifice the movie’s quality or the story to appease Hollywood release schedules. He’s been slowly working on a script based on Herbert’s Dune Messiah in the background. Telling Den of Geek

“I think you cannot avoid Paul’s terrible purpose, that’s the structure of this whole enterprise. Saying this, I do not like to comment on Dune Messiah because I’m writing it, and when I’m writing, I love to shut up because it’s a very delicate time where things are fragile, ideas evolve. I like to talk about movies when they are alive, finished, and strong enough to walk by themselves. Dune Messiah is barely an embryo.”

Go See Dune: Part Two RIGHT NOW

Dune: Part Two covers the second half of the classic sci-fi novel. It starts with Paul and Jessica’s trek to the Fremen sietch. This half will bring more interplanetary politics, Paul’s rise as a leader, and the fight for Arrakis’ freedom that becomes Muad’Dib’s Jihad.

At the end of the first movie, House Harkonnen regains its control over Arrakis. They aim to keep their power using a heavy arsenal and the backing of the Emperor. But there is a power rising against them, led by a boy they thought they’d killed.
