A few key anime won big this year at the anime awards. And while to some the winners were no surprise, to others they were on the “maybe later” list all year. If you weren’t sure what this year’s anime awards were on about, these are the anime and manga to check out right away!

1. Jujutsu Kaisen

“To gain the power he needs to save his friend from a cursed spirit, Yuji Itadori swallows a piece of a demon, only to find himself caught in the midst of a horrific war of the supernatural! In a world where cursed spirits feed on unsuspecting humans, fragments of the legendary and feared demon Ryomen Sukuna were lost and scattered about. Should any demon consume Sukuna’s body parts, the power they gain could destroy the world as we know it.”

JJK took home Anime of the Year, Best Action, Best Character Design, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Opening Sequence, Best Ending Sequence, and Best Supporting Character (Satoru Gojo).

2. Chainsaw Man

“Denji was a small-time devil hunter just trying to survive in a harsh world. After being killed on a job, he is revived by his pet devil Pochita, and becomes something new and dangerous—Chainsaw Man!”

Chainsaw Man won Best New Series.

3. Suzume

“Suzume’s journey begins when she meets a young man looking for a door. Following him, she finds one and reaches for the knob. Doors open across Japan, unleashing destruction. Now Suzume must close them to prevent further disaster.

On the other side of the door…was time in its entirety.”

Suzume won Best Film.

4. Attack on Titan

“Humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming humanity. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world killing off humankind for years.

For the past century, what’s left of mankind has been hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, which are 10 to 20 meters tall. But the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything.”

Attack on Titan won Best Drama and Best Score.

5. Bocchi the Rock!

“Hitori Gotoh just wants to be popular, but the thought of interacting with her classmates makes her fall to pieces. Her solution is to become a rock legend so cool that people approach her instead! However, while spending all of middle school in her closet shredding on the guitar may have earned her anonymous internet fame, it did nothing for her social skills.

Now a high schooler, Hitori’s feeling ready to shrivel up and die when she gets a sudden request to fill in for a band! It’s like her wish came true–but does this most anxious of introverts have what it takes to perform in front of a live audience?!”

Bocchi the Rock! won Best Slice of Life.
