A new, ferocious leader is on the rise in the latest Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer.

The new chapter is set years after 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Caesar successfully led his people to a utopia. This has allowed the ape society to grow in size and intelligence while humans have turned to a feral existence. They’ve been forced to live in the shadows as the balance of power shifts.

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, that utopia is changing. Some have never heard of Caesar, others twist his teachings. A tyrannical new leader has taken power, a leader who’s using Caesar’s teachings to carry out nefarious plans of domination. While he builds a new empire using human tech, a young ape goes on a journey that causes him to question the past and try to define a new future.

New Trailer

I’ve been a fan of the reboot since the first movie dropped in 2011, thanks to its performances and stories. While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has a new team behind it (and an unwieldy title), it seems to be bringing more of those elements and the start of the world in the 1968 classic. Let’s hope the writing is as good.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Cast

The cast includes William H. Macy, Owen Teague, Freya Allen (The Witcher), Dichen Lachman, and Peter Macon. This movie doesn’t include Andy Serkis’ Caesar. Wes Ball directed it from a script by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver.

“Apes are the dominant species living harmoniously with one another and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.  As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape will undertake a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released in theaters on May 10th.
