Check out a new featured Commander to add to your build list! This week features Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools, who sees his partner as a means to an end.

Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our new series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, aka, your Commander.

Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is an excellent source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.

The Commander

Tevesh Szat is an interesting choice for Commander. A hero or villain, as his whims see fit, he’s a bit expensive for what he does. However, as a planeswalker and partner Commander, he can dodge a lot of standard removal and optimize his color access to fit your playstyle.

On the surface, Tevesh wants to play as an aristocrat enabler. His primary ability gives you sacrifice fodder, and his second ability (also a plus) gives you a card draw for sacrificing a creature or planeswalker. Should that permanent happen to be a Commander (doesn’t have to be yours), you get an extra card.

His ultimate ability, and only minus, gives you control of all Commanders, even if they aren’t on the field yet. This is a HUGE hit, but it also costs ten loyalty, and Tevesh will definitely be targeted before he can get there. You’ll want to keep him protected or be able to get him to that juicy ten faster.

The best way to get Tevesh to his ult is to make sure he comes in with extra tokens. There are tons of Green partners you can stitch on to Tevesh, which in turn gives you access to Vorniclex, every Planeswalker’s best friend. This deadly Phyrexian will see Tevesh entering the battlefield with eight loyalty counters, and then both of Szat’s own abilities will get him to ten in a single turn. Best of all, Vorinclex is still a nasty 6/6 beater with trample and haste, so he can still dole out damage even if you don’t get to steal Commanders.

Another easy include in Planeswalker-themed decks, The Chain Veil will help you get the most out of your big bad Commander. For the low price of four mana, you get to activate all your Planeswalkers an additional time. While you still can’t get Tevesh to the kill zone in a single turn without help this way, adding this to the Vorinclex wombo combo could be an instakill.

MTG is ever-changing, with new busted and broken cards rising to the top. Check back in next week for another featured Commander.
