Games Workshop has released a new points update for Warhammer 40,000 and has also laid out some rough timelines for future updates.

There’s a new Metawatch video explaining a lot of the points updates out today. It dips into a lot of the “why” these changes have been added. It’s worth checking out if you’re curious about the internal balance for an army.

That said, the major update is the points changes themselves. You can download those from the link below.

Munitorum Field Manual – Points Changes For All

This time around in the update, GW color coded the changes. Units that got a points decrease are green while units that got a points increase are red. If they stayed the same, they are still grey.

On a very high level the goal is pretty straight forward for GW. They want to tune things so that units and combos that were seeing tons of play got addressed. For other units that were mostly ignored they wanted to drop their points to encourage folks to give them a look.

If you’re playing 40k you’re going to want to do the bare minimum and check to see how your army has been impacted. And, considering this is a free download, it’s probably a good idea. Who knows — maybe your non-meta army just got some big points drops and you’ll be able to bring even more of your favorite stuff!

Balance Dataslate and Munitorum Field Manual Timelines

Games Workshop also wanted to give a rough outline for the time tables for these types of updates.

via Warhammer Community

“The first key point is that the Warhammer Studio aims to release a Munitorum Field Manual update every quarter, and a Balance Dataslate every other quarter. This isn’t a fixed schedule – the start of the edition saw two Dataslates in a row, to help adjust factions in the new game.”

Again, these aren’t a fixed schedule but we’re looking at (roughly) 4 updates to points a year and 2 updates to the Balance Dataslate per year. Considering that the Balance Dataslate can change the game rules for both core and army specific rules, I think the extra time is warranted. I also like that the points updates are ideally more frequent as sometimes a unit just needs a point tweak to be more inline with the current game state.

So go check out you army and see how their points changed. There’s only a handful of armies that received no changes at all.

Do you get a points break or will you need to make some cuts to get back under 2000 points?
