D&D: Dimension 20’s Packed Madison Square Garden Show is a Real Game-Changer

Dimension 20 packed almost 20,000 people into Madison Square Garden for a livestreamed D&D show where the audience could roll.
This past weekend, Dimension 20 packed Madison Square Garden – the same arena that has hosted artists like Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift—full of fans, eager to watch a game of D&D. That alone, is fascinating stuff. It’s the kind of headline you wouldn’t have considered even 5 years ago. Sure, Critical Role was blowing up (and still is), but live shows were events at niche conventions, like Gen Con or at the kind of venues where they sometimes do live podcast recordings.
Dimension 20 not only filled Madison Square Garden, they also invited fans to influence the game. Audience members could roll, thanks to an app, and the collective rolls meant that certain “surprises” would unfold in-game. Cameos, crits, and more.
Dimension 20 Live At Madison Square Garden
Of course, the world has changed so much since January, 2020. But that was back when we were still living in even vaguely precedented times. One of the of changes was the rise of Dropout.tv, the home of Dimension 20. They’ve been making huge waves. And, more importantly, let the creativity of their shows run wild.
This got us D&D but as a high school movie, or D&D set in a Candyland as brutal as Westeris. And most relevant to the recent live show, D&D set in New York City.
Because the Dimension 20 crew revisited the Unsleeping City, for a show called the Gaubtlet at the Garden. DM Brennan Lee Mulligan led the Intrepid Heroes, aka: Zac Oyama, Emily Axford, Lou Wilson, Brian Murphy, Ally Beardsley and Siobhan Thompson, through a literal gauntlet that was apropos considering both the real life and in-game location.
But then the audience got to roll dice too! And their rolls determined which characters from other Dimension 20 shows appeared, including my personal favorites, Gilear Faeth and Plugg Strutt. Without spoiling the show completely, it has definitely raised the bar for any other love D&D shown you might see. Or stream.
What a VOD this is going to be!
