The Scourge of Ghyran is getting spooky. The Nighthaunt are coming to play with new battle formations, artefacts, and warscrolls!

We’re on to day five of the Scourge of Ghyran updates. The ghosts of the Nighthaunt are up and they are ready to strike fear into the hearts of, well, everyone. So let’s see what this spectral procession is packing!

“Kneel before us miserable creature and tremble, for the Nighthaunt have come. Gaze upon our wicked procession and know the horrors that are to be unleashed upon you.”

Scourge of Ghyran – Nighthaunt Battle Formations

First up, we have the new Hungry Nexus battle formation. This one allows you to move your Nexus of Grief terrain feature into the enemy. This will (apparently) tie the enemy down and deny them access to commands which sounds great. The only problem I have with this one is that I’m not sure where to find the Nexus of Grief rules at. They are supposed to be in the downloads section. However, I can’t seem to find them. If someone does find them (or if there’s an updated link later) I’ll update this article with that info.

The second battle formation is the Deathrust Gheists and this one is fairly straightforward. It simply reduces the armor save of a single enemy unit in combat with a Nighthaunt unit for the rest of the turn. That could be really devastating on the right units. It can make those nigh impossible units to take down a lot easier to deal with. Or it can make those pesky units with a poor armor save just flat-out not have one.

New Nighthaunt Artefacts of Power

For the new Artefacts of Power for the Nighthaunt we’ve got the relics of Dolorum. These are only usable by heroes and there’s three to try out. The Stave of Suffering can be a big boost for your wizards in the army. As long as the bearer is within 12″ of a unit that has taken damage or had any models slain, all casters wholly within 12″ of this unit have +1 to casting rolls. Kind of a funky way to get a boost but it could be worth it.

Amulet of the Waking Nightmares can causes an enemy hero to be unable to get the Guarded Hero or Obscuring terrain ability. It’s on a 3+ roll so it’s not guaranteed. The impact could be good, but it also feels situational. Tombstone of the Penitent allows for your heroes to potentially get a massive boost to their attacks. This caps out at 8 bonus attacks. So if you can manage to contest a bunch of non-faction terrain your hero will be swinging for the fences!

New Nighthaunt Warscrolls

The two updated warscrolls are pretty iconic units for the Nighthaunt. There’s an alternate version of Kudross Valentian and also the Black Coach.

Kurdoss is even more of a bully with this warscroll. His Inescapable Mockery grants him +1 to both hit and wound rolls when he’s targeting a unit with a lower Control characteristic then he has. To follow that up he’s also got his new A Traitor’s Legacy rule which has a trio of options to choose from. There’s a generic +1 Rend vs Heroes, a bonus to a unit’s Control score, and then there’s the classic “deny commands to enemy units in combat with this unit.” All of them have their uses.

For the Black Coach has a few new abilities. For starters, it has the option to become a wizard now. So that’s neat. I really like the One Stop, No Return ability as it straight-up denies enemies from getting critical hits. That could really shut them down. And while it won’t translocate around the board as much it’s got a 3D6 charge thanks to Spectral Carriage. The Black Coach is still good at smashing into things!

As always, these new warscrolls are legal for Matched Play so you can swap them out if you choose.

The Nighthaunt are moving to terrify the Mortal Realm of Ghyran!
