Age of Sigmar: Scourge of Ghyran – Skaven Updates

Games Workshop is kicking off the Scourge of Ghyran event for Age of Sigmar and the Skaven updates are up first.
As part of the lead up to the release of the next General’s Handbook 2025-26 season, Games Workshop is releasing new rules for every faction. These updates include a few alternate warscrolls for folks to use. There’s also some new battle formations to try out as well. The Skaven are first up and are sort of our test subjects. Let’s see what they are getting.
“With the Envoys of the Deepengnaw, you can pile your Verminlords into combat knowing full well that you can deflect damage onto your Skaven minions. That’s surely what they’re for anyway, right? Meanwhile, if you choose Gathering the Clans, you can essentially perform a mass Redeploy to get your Skaven out of trouble.”

As mentioned above, we’ve got two new Battle Formations to try out. Envoys of the Deepengnaw and Gathering of the Clans. Those are summarized above, so let’s continue on. Next up, we have Heroic Traits:
It’s unclear if all the Heroic Traits are going to be for heroes only in other Scourge of Ghyran options. For now, we know that’s the case for Skaven. They have three different ones to try out with Devious Underling, Fleshmeddler, and Pit Tinkerer. These are really going to depend on what sort of Skaven force you’re assembling. Obviously, you’ll need to pair the last two up with the right unit types (Moulder or Skyre War Machines, respectively) if you want to get the most bang for your warpstone bucks.
Alternative Warscrolls
Finally, we get a look at a pair of alternate Warscrolls you can choose to use. As mentioned yesterday, if you do opt for using these, they replace the existing versions for your entire army — you can’t take both. It’s all or nothing here. Anyhow, now that we’ve got some examples, these make a tad more sense.
The Grey Seer on Screaming Bell is really a returning option with a twist. The first of two big changes here are that it will either buff your Skaven or mess with your foes — depending on the turn number. And the second thing is the ability to Gnaw Through Reality. I guess for Skaven, “more Gnawholes is better?”
The next alternative Warscroll is the Brood Terror. This version hits a tad harder and also comes with a much welcomed Ward of 5+. There’s also the very odd and slightly gross Lend a Claw ability. This causes the Brood Terror to lose 1 attack on their Loosely Attacched Bladed Limbs while another friendly Moulder unit gains +1 to hit. It’s worth noting you can opt for up to a total of 4 units to gain this “benefit” from the Brood Terror. I’ll let you imagine how that would work thematically…
In case you were wondering if you can field these in your army, there’s the points and yes, they are GW approved for Matched Play, too!
That’s quite the way to kick things off for the Scourge of Ghyran. We’ll have to see how the other armies respond in the coming days.
So Skaven fans, is this one a win-win for you?
