Life-Sized LEGO F1 Cars Hit The Grand Prix Track

LEGO builders spent over 22,000 hours building ten life-size, working F1 cars – one for each team – that debuted at the Grand Prix of Miami.
LEGO’s partnership with F1 just got bigger—literally. A skilled team of 26 designers, engineers, and builders spent nearly two and a half years creating full-size, drivable versions of the new Speed Champion sets. Each of the ten teams got its own two-seat custom car.
“We build bricks in the software as you would build bricks at home, but this is a different scale, so we lay them down layer by layer, like you would build a house, for example. And then when we’re finished, we prepare a manual, like you get in a set in the shop, for our builders. And they go layer by layer, gluing the bricks until we have these wonderful cars.”

Each big build weighs 3,307 lbs (around 1,100 lbs of bricks) and can reach speeds of around 12.5 mph. LEGO didn’t get into what kind of motor or chassis the cars have, but all of them are fitted with track-ready Pirelli wheels and soft racing tires, just like their 850 horsepower counterparts.
All ten teams took the cars out during the F1 Grand Prix of Miami at the Miami International Autodrome. Team Mercedes’ George Russell and Kim Antonelli tried to overtake team Ferrari… and almost crashed into them.
These LEGO F1 big builds are going on a full global tour, so if you’re going to a race this season you’ll be able to get a closer look at them. There’s a full video of the cars on the track on F1’s YouTube channel; you can watch it here.
