Warhammer 40K: Pricing Out A ‘Games Workshop’ World Eaters Army

Games Workshop is relaunching the World Eaters and they have some suggestions on how to build an army. But how much would it actually cost?
Today, WarCom put out an article talking about Starting a World Eaters Army in 40k. It’s worth a read if you’re looking to dive into the blood-soaked gore that is the World Eaters. In the article they have some suggestions on where to start and what units to buy. That’s cool and all but let’s remember just over a week ago they actually let a Tournament Pro put together a few lists.
Personally, when I’m looking to start a new army, I like to know where it’s heading. Those lists were a perfect blueprint for a functional army on the tabletop. “So why not just build one of those?” is where my mind went. So let’s do that. But let’s do that from the prospective of how it’s going to hit my wallet. That’s right folks, we’re going to be pricing out an World Eaters army from scratch*. So let’s do this thing.
*Quick note: I’m going to assume you’ve got paint, glue, and other hobby supplies already. I’m also skipping the codex price, too. And we’re going to be basing our pricing of the US GW website. Sorry, no trading, looking on eBay, or other third party sites for deals. That said, we’re going to look for deals where we can — specifically the Combat Patrol as an example.
Pricing Out World Eaters Army
Of the two army lists, I’m going with the Berzerker Warband. That’s for a reason that will become clear in a moment. So now that we know which list we’re aiming to build, let’s get to pricing it out!
Kicking things off (and the reason we opted for this list) we have the Combat Patrol. This one clocks in at $170 and it’s a steal of deal for this list. Why? Well, you get to cross off the following units:
- 1x Daemon Prince
- 1x Master of Executions
- 10x Khorne Berzerkers
- 10x Jakhals
That’s a good chunk of units for sure. Now, I could see the case for just buying a second one. However, we’re going to buy exactly what we need as we’re not going to be trading or selling off any extras to recoup our costs. I’m trying to keep this as accurate as possible to the GW pricing. So, let’s continue.
Unfortunately, the Battleforce Gorestorm Slaughterpack is already out of stock. That would have been a good snag at $240. Oh well. And, at this point, there’s no more boxed sets to really get a good deal on for what we need.
Now we’ve finished up our HQ choices for an additional $107. That brings our total so far up to $277. But we’ve really just scratch the surface. Time to hit up the rest of the army now…
- 10x Jakhals $58
- 10x Khorne Berzerkers $65
Well, we do need these two boxes for our army. That’s another $123 added to the total. That brings us to a cool $400 at this point. And we’re about 1/2 way there, right?
- Chaos Spawn $58
- Chaos Spawn $58
- Chaos Spawn $58
Ugh. Okay, I’m gonna be real here — I don’t like these models. But they are in the list so we’re adding them. If I was reworking this list for me personally, I’d find some other unit to fill these spots. But you do you. This is an additional $174 that I really don’t want to spend. Plus, we’re up to $574.
- 3x Eightbound $62.50
- 3x Eightbound $62.50
Well, these are at least miniature from this decade (still mad about those Spawn). Anyhow, it’s another $125 for our budget. We’re now at $699.
- Forgefiend $84
- Forgefiend $84
Two Forgefiends will cost you a total of $168. I don’t have much else to say about these other than I do like the models. That brings our total up to $867. But now I’m wishing I had purchased when they first came out…
- Chaos Rhino $60
- Chaos Rhino $60
No tanks, just two Rhinos please.
Two Rhinos will run you another $120. But hey, we’re done now! And our total is…$987 pre-tax. You didn’t forget about taxes, did you? I’m going to leave those off so we can all be happy this list is just under $1000! …yeah.
Other Thoughts & Musings
You know, while this list is probably a good army on the tabletop and everything I do feel like we’re missing something. Specifically a certain Primarch…
While he’s not in the list, Angron seems like a miniature you’d at least want in your collection if you’re going to be playing World Eaters. I’d gladly trade out the $$$ for the Spawn to have Angron in my collection.
There’s also the Lord of Skulls which…I’m less enthused about adding. Some folks love this guy. Me…I’ll stick with Angron as my big, centerpiece model.
Having priced all that out I can see why those army boxes go so fast. It’s also puts a few other things in perspective.
For me, I think we should all consider this when we see another player across the tabletop from now on. This was a 2000 point army that was just under $987 (pre-tax). If the person across from you is spending that much money (not to mention the time to build and paint it all) just to play a game with you maybe try to have a good time for BOTH of your sakes.
Another thing that should hopefully be a wake-up call is how this is this pricing is suppose to be an entry point for an existing player. We didn’t include all the extras you need to actually build this army. Dropping $1000 on just the miniatures is a big hurdle. I don’t want to get into the hobby supply side of things. And we haven’t considered Terrain either. Yikes.
If you’ve made it this far you’re probably wondering “what’s the point? We all know 40k is expensive.” Yeah. Yeah we do. But this is making realize how much more approachable Combat Patrol or Kill Team is starting to sound. Especially if you want to play a new army.
Also, and this is just advice from a long time player and collector: Don’t buy everything all at once. You’ll have a mountain of plastic and you will likely get discouraged to finish it. I prefer the long term approach of building an army over time. Unless you find a sweet deal via some Army Boxes or Combat Patrols, I like the method of getting a new unit after I’ve completed one. That helps tickle the reward center in my brain. I complete a task, I reward myself with a new unit. Repeat until done. It also helps with the budgeting, too.
So…anyone looking to start a new army for 40k? Why is your wallet crying/hiding in the corner?
