AoS: Best of the Worst – Best Units From The Big Four Chaos Factions

The Blades of Khorne are getting an update, but they aren’t the only Chaos faction causing havoc in the Realms.
Welcome in, Generals of the Realms! We’re back again with another Grand Alliance battle royale. However, this time there’s only one Alliance in the ring, and they’re sending their best. The Blades of Khorne are about to unleash an awesome new battletome and a gnarly new hero, so I thought it was the perfect time to shine the spotlight on Chaos. Every faction is full to bursting with amazing models, so it’ll be tough to pick just one. Thankfully, Scourge of Ghyran has made my job a little easier in some places.

Blades of Khorne: Mighty Lord of Khorne
Starting things off with the army of the hour, the Blades of Khorne have plenty of amazing models to choose from, from Bloodthirsters to Skull Cannons. However, I have to give my vote to the most recent update for the Mighty Lord. This powerhouse took a huge hit at the top of 4.0, but Ghyran brought back his fangs in a major way.
The thing that puts this man on the list is his recently updated Reality Splitting Axe. The ability to chuck your opponents into the Realm of Khorne is back, and I love that. While he isn’t the strongest, largest, or most detailed model in the range, his ability to delete problematic heroes combined with his OG leader status makes him my favorite model for Khorne.
Hedonites of Slaanesh: Mesmerising Mirror
Slaanesh, like the other gods, has no shortage of powerful contenders. You’ve got lightning-fast daemons, deadly armored warriors, and duplicitous magic. However, only the chosen himself could truly stand at the xenith of this illustrious army. I’m talking, of course, about the Prince of Perfection himself, Sigvald.
The Magnificent Malcontent is an absolute bombshell on the battlefield. While he lacks any sort of magical ability, his combat prowess is not to be ignored. If he charges, his attacks become equal to the charge roll, and he gains Always Strike First, allowing him to set your army up for a devastating combat turn. Best of all, his blade ignores Ward Saves, so squishy units hiding behind a magical shield will find themselves undone by the magnificence of Shardslash.
Disciples of Tzeentch: Lord of Change
Finally, we’re bringing a daemon into the mix! The Disciples of Tzeentch have always sort of flip-flopped between overwhelmingly powerful and depressingly mediocre. They’re in a firm middle ground at the moment, but there’s one thing that never changes: the wiz-bird is still top of the pecking order.
You can kit out your Lord of Change for either melee or ranged combat, but for my money the ranged Rod of Sorcery is the superior choice. With the Wyrdflame ability from your faction combined with a huge attack pool and a nasty spell, you’ll be burning down the house in no time. Best of all, you can resurrect a daemon unit that goes down, and slow down your opponent’s battle strategy with a flat -1 to hit your daemons. Plus, his model is just gorgeous.
Maggotkin of Nurgle: Lord of Afflictions
Picking a unit for the Maggotkin of Nurgle was easily the hardest part of this list. Almost everything they bring to the table could easily contend for the top spot. They’re resilient, strong, and deadly in equal measure, and there’s truly no bad option. However, for me, the look of the Lord of Afflictions gives him a slight slimy edge over the competition.
The true Lord of the Flies, this nasty leader choice for your pustulent party will have your opponents retching. He’s no slouch in combat with a deadly suite of attacks, he does passive damage just for being nearby, and he can buff the weapons of his fellow Blightlords. When you hear the buzzing, it’s already too late.
Did your favorite unit make the cut?
