D&D: Valda’s Gunslinger Class Comes To D&D Beyond—But Not Without Controversy

The Gunslinger Class out of Valda’s Spire of Secrets is available on D&D Beyond, but not without raising a few eyebrows in the community.
A new class comes to D&D Beyond this week; the Gunslinger out of Valda’s Spire of Secrets. If you’re unfamiliar with the book, it’s both a huge expansion for D&D 5th Edition and it’s a lighthearted take on everything high fantasy. You can get a sense of this in the Player’s Pack, which is available on D&D Beyond and features subclasses like the Paladin Oath of Revelry, whose tenets include adhering to the “Codicus Brodicus.” Yeah, that about sums up the tone.
And Valda’s Spire of Secrets, available from Mage Hand Press, is also full of classes—one of which is available on its own right now on D&D Beyond: the Gunslinger. The Gunslinger, out of Valda’s Spire of Secrets, is exactly what you’d think. It’s a full class from 1-20 all about shooting your way out of your problems. It comes with 6 full subclasses, new spells and feats, and has also raised some dust among the D&D community over the pricing of it all.
Valda’s Spire of Secrets‘ Gunslinger is on D&D Beyond
The Gunslinger is available now for $14.99. The issue at hand with the pricing, is that you can snag the full PDF from Mage Hand Press for around $30 (less since it’s on sale for 10% off right now). And in Valda’s Spire of Secrets, you don’t just get ONE new class. There are TEN. Which has led to some controversy as players point out that you get 1/10th the content for half the price.
Now, it’s not as though there’s not some added value. This comes with full integration into D&D Beyond. And while I don’t know what the pricing scheme is like with regards to creator payout, I would hope that it’s worth it for Mage Hand Press. Especially since these all seem to be updated to 5.5E compatibleness. That’s the default on D&D Beyond.
But it’s a question of what feels right. How much to set the price for a single class and the six subclasses and everything else that accompanies it. This is part of a larger discussion on how much work should be worth that we’re not here to answer.
Instead, we’re here to look at what the class is all about!
“You’re a Gunslinger, cool under pressure and deadly in a quick-draw. You may have few friends, but your enemies will be quaking in their boots.
AdvertisementPlay the Gunslinger class if you enjoy scoring powerful Critical Hits and having an entire arsenal of guns at your disposal.
Unlock the complete Gunslinger class from levels 1-20, 6 gun-toting subclasses, an arsenal of new firearms to explore, a host of new maneuvers powered by Risk Dice, 9 spells, and 3 feats.”
And you get full integration with D&D Beyond’s toolset. If that’s where you’re playing, this is going to be a huge boon, because you won’t have to custom put everything in yourself. So now you can check out the Spellslinger, which lets you load up your gun with spells and shoot your enemies with magic. Or the Deadeye, for sniper wannabes (no word on if the firearms in the Gunslinger’s arsenal are still, somehow, worse than longbows). You can be a Secret Agent for James Bond fantasies. Or a White Hat, High Roller, or Trick Shot for those in Western games.
The Gunslinger is locked and loaded!
