‘The Crooked Moon’ Brings Folk Horror For 5E And 5.5E To D&D Beyond

One of the biggest 5E Kickstarters lands on D&D Beyond this week. Check out The Crooked Moon and all its folk-horror goodness.
Say what you will about D&D, the people want it to go with horror vibes, as often as not. Case in point, look at Curse of Strahd, Dungeons of Drakkenheim, or as we will today, The Crooked Moon from Avantris Entertainment, now on D&D Beyond. This massive sourcebook takes D&D and mashes it with grim, dark fantasy inspired by “classic Halloween aesthetics.” And that means it’s spooky time. Spookable here meaning new subclasses, monsters, spells, and so much more.
The Crooked Moon – Would You Like Some More Horror On D&D Beyond?
Honestly, I think part of the D&D -> Horror appeal is that unlike games, like, say, Call of Cthulhu where it’s sort of expected that your investigators may succeed at their objectives but almost always at great personal sacrifice, i.e. losing their sanity or dying horribly. Either way, a terrible fate. But D&D is different. Here you win. It’s basically a DJ Khaled song, because with D&D and especially D&D 5.5E, it’s very easy to make a character who takes the assumed encounter math and stomps it into the ground.
That’s part of the fun of D&D. Layer on the idea of kicking some horrific monster in the nards, Lost Boys style, and you’ve got a recipe for successipe. Who doesn’t love roaring right back at the monsters? That’s the strength of D&D. And this book is massive! Its a 632-pager absolutely packed with new stuff to play with. There are FIFTEEN new subclasses. Each one with its own haunting folkloric theme. Some are nice, like the Cleric of the Harvest Domain; some a little creepy, like the Druids of the Circle of the Old Ways.
And then there are the truly haunted ones. Like the Druid Circle of Wicker. Or the Barrow Guard Fighter and Monk of the Way of the Pestilent Haze. Yeah. There’s a lot that’s cursed here, but that’s kind of the vibe.
“Embark upon a journey into the unknown, where folk with strange superstitions revere the Old Ways, and creatures of folklore lurk on the fringes of civilization. Now is the time to brave the dark wood, beware the witching hour, and weave your own dreadful folktale underneath the Crooked Moon.
This 632-page tome provides tools to bring Folk Horror to fifth edition and terrify your friends in a haunting game you’ll never forget, drawing inspiration from grim folklore, legendary horror films, and classic Halloween aesthetics.
Evoke true terror with what lurks inside!”
