Total War: Warhammer 3‘s new patch updates magic items, campaign AI, and even throws in a few new units for good measure.

Total War: Warhammer 3 got a sweeping new update this week. Patch 6.2 is here with a major overhaul to many systems. Campaign AI, Magic Items, and a new unit of Hobgoblins that are doomstacking behind your new Legendary Lord right now! It’s a massive patch, but a free one ahead of the upcoming DLC. With big improvements, it’s probably time to go back and start another campaign.

Why are people excited for patch 6.2? I think it comes down to two big reasons. First, it provides some much needed love to a few systems that were starting to look a little peaked. Which, great, the game needed that. Especially the magic item rework. It’s fresher now, as you’ll soon see.

But this also marks the transition to another tram for TW: WH 3. Now it’s Creative Assembly Sofia, I believe. And the community was worried that it would feel like the Warhammer franchise was getting slighted while the main team was off working on the shiny new hotness. But it turns out, the game is in good hands, which is amazing for the dedicated players who keep summoning the elector-counts when it’s time to start a new game.

The patch notes for this one are fairly extensive. But here are a few highlights to help you get a feel for how things shake out in the new update:

“The Magic Item system has undergone a major overhaul, aiming to unify item design, balance power levels, and reduce inventory clutter. In total some 600+ ancillaries (all items in common, uncommon and rare) have had their effects and rarity adjusted to match our new balancing paradigm.

All items now follow a uniqueness/cost matrix to ensure rarity matches item strength. [There are] clearer power differences between common, uncommon, and rare items. [As well as] rebalanced rarity thresholds (e.g., commons now 35–50, uncommons start at 80).

As part of the changes, CA has introduced new magic item effects, as well as several new items, including new unique magic items. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are also a number of technical improvements—including an update to the game’s commpression that, when installed, will reduce the game’s overall size.
