Warhammer 40K: New Black Templars Codex Supplement & Crusade Ancient Revealed

The Black Templars are next up for a refresh for Warhammer 40,000. They’ve got a new ocdex supplement and a new Crusade Ancient inbound!
It’s time to get your crusaders together because the Black Templars are on the move. With a new codex supplement in tow as well as a new character they ready to purge the threats to the Imperium.
“This book enhances the rules and units found in Codex: Space Marines with classic Black Templars flavour – including Crusader Squads, Sword Brethren, and renowned characters like High Marshal Helbrecht and Chaplain Grimaldus. Three new detachments give you thematic armies to take to the stars, and extra Oathsworn Campaign options for Crusade make your narrative games feel like a real Templar story.”
A New Black Templar Codex & Character
If you’re a Black Templar fan or if you’re looking to join their crusade you’re going to want to get the codex supplement. Now, this is a supplement which means you’re going to need to bring along the Codex: Space Marine book, too. Inside the Black Templar’s book you’ll get all their special units listed above:
- Crusader Squads
- Sword Brethren
- High Marshal Helbrecht
- Chaplain Grimaldus
There’s also other characters and units like the Emperor’s Champion, Marshals, and whatever else GW decides to throw in the mix. Additionally, there’s the new Crusade Ancient character that’s being added to the range, too.
“As experienced veterans even among the Chapter’s other banner bearers, Crusade Ancients have the honour of carrying the Black Templars’ most sacred icons and standards into battle. Their booming rhetoric drives their fellow Templars to acts of righteous hatred even as bombs and bullets whistle around them, inspiring allies with feats of resilience and resolve.”
At first glance I did wonder if GW was re-working the Emperor’s Champion. But (mercifully) no, this is a new a character. Rocking a massive crusade banner and packing some old-school flair he’s ready to go to war. It’s worth noting that the banner has a pair of options. You can go with the Ork Skull from Armageddon or you can opt for a blank shield that you can then paint your own battle honors on.
This one’s a tough call for me. There’s a LOT of players that started Black Templars around 3rd edition with the Black Templars on the cover. Plus we had the first Armageddon codex, too. That Ork Skull option is going to be popular to for that subset of players for sure.
Anyhow, the Black Templars and their new Crusade Ancient are coming out “later this year.” I’m not sure how far off GW is teasing them but I’m excited to see what else they are packing in the codex supplement.
Time to brush up on your Black Templar Oaths.
