We’ve got the Grand Army of Cathay’s new Battalion Box in the studio. Time to take a closer look at the miniatures inside!

Warhammer: The Old World is getting a brand new army up for pre-order this weekend. Cathay is finally making it’s way to the tabletop and it’s quite an impressive range. And, to be frank, this new box is a steal of a deal. I’m not 100% sure on the points in the box but if I were going to play this army, I’d probably want to snag two copies just so I’d have all the generic miniatures I’d need.

That said, Abe got in there and built these miniatures and shared the photos. I’m excited to take a look at these new sculpts for The Old World!

Grand Cathay Jade Warriors

The Jade Warriors are the bread and butter of this army. You’ve got options for swords and shields or spears. There’s a crazy amount of detail and character for each one of these miniatures. If I’m being honest, it’s almost too much. This is an army that you’re going to want a plan for the paint scheme. I suggest you keep it clean and simple. Painting all of them up is already going to be a battle of attrition. While a super complex scheme will look amazing, it’s also going to make it that much more challenging to complete.

I know there are going to be painters and hobbyists out there who take on that challenge. I salute them for it. The Army of Grand Cathay is one of those that is going to look good painted. But putting in the extra effort is really going to showcase all those details. But enough about that. Let’s check out the cavlary!

Grand Cathay Jade Lancers

You get 10 of the Jade Lancers in the box. Again, loads of details to really pick out if you want to. All that scale mail will drive you crazy if you let it! I think these are great sculpts and classic horses are a nice change of pace from the more fantastical cavalry we see from The Age of Sigmar. With that in mind, I could totally see these miniatures in AoS. I’ve said it before but this army is going to look different from other Old World armies because of all that extra detail. I’m still worried this army might cause a style clash when facing off against the older miniatures from the Old World. I hope I’m wrong!

Grand Cathay Artillery & Crew

The artillery kits in the box are really neat. You get two of them and can build cannons or rockets — your choice. And these are BIG kits. Relatively speaking, they dwarf other cannons in the Old World range. Abe took a comparison shot:

Newer and better? Perhaps. But definitely different! Personally, I just like how characterful the crew is for this army. I can’t wait to see what else folks do with this kit. It’s tempting to make a diorama just out of the cannons and crew.

The battalion box is up for pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop. Good luck getting your hands on this one. I have a funny feeling that it’s going to move pretty quick!
