Games Workshop has a brand new Warband Roster for Warcry called Varanscribe. Track your warband AND your campaign in one spot!

Warcry’s release has been pretty impressive from Games Workshop. Not only did they put out a great starter, but they also released the 6 all-new warbands along with card packs other factions to bring the total up to 15 right out of the gate! And they haven’t stopped there. Today, they have announced a brand new piece of software on the Warhammer Community site to help you manage your warband – and it’s all 100% FREE.

Warcry: Varanscribe

This web-based app has a lot of functionality to it that GW didn’t have to add. It’s got your basics covered:

You can start a warband by picking your faction and by naming them. Then it opens up into your roster page:

No big deal, right? Add some fighters and it points out your list. But that’s not all. You can not only name your fighter, but you can also add all the background (it’s a drop-down menu), artefacts, and command traits as well. Plus it tracks Destiny Levels for each fighter – all on the app.

Then you can hop over the Campaign Tab where it tracks your warband’s individual story. And it comes with a nice map of the mission your on plus a tracker:

It helps you track your Progress, Dominated Territory and Glory all in one spot. Not too shabby, right? You can also export your lists, too. And as an added bonus, if you have cookies enabled on your browser, it will save your warband when you go back to the page later:

You can make multiple warbands and it will save them for you online. Now, I’m not sure if there is a way to access these warbands from another device. I tried on my phone and desktop but it didn’t show the same warbands – which is why I believe it’s cookie-based. But still, it’s a nice thought. You can download a PDF of your warband and take that with you – just update it manually when you get back and you’re good to go.

Web-Based App, Already?

Here’s the deal – GW didn’t have to do this and while it’s missing a feature like the cross-save option, it’s still a pretty impressive setup. Think about it: Warcry hasn’t even been in stores for a month yet and GW has already dropped the warband roster, FOR FREE, on their website. That took some planning and some forethought. How many of GW’s other games got that kind of attention at release?

Warcry is a fun game and it’s got a lot of support tossed behind it from GW. They have also announced some Organized Play support in the form of league/tournament support for stores:

Prize Support!

Games Workshop has done a great job of getting “Stuff” out for Warcry and I hope this is their model for supporting this and other games moving forward. Warcry might be the exception to the rule, but I think all this planning and attention on the game is only going to help it grow into a “real” game in the future.

If you’ve got a moment and are on the internet, go over to the page and poke around – I think you’ll like what you find.
