RPG: ‘Outgunned Adventure’ – Pulp Adventures For A Cinematic System Out For Pre-Order Now

The cinematic RPG, Outgunned, gets a whole slew of pulpy adventure in its first “genre book” core rules expansion, Outgunned Adventure.
Outgunned is an award-winning cinematic action RPG. Steeped in high-octane adventure, delivered via its unique “Director’s Cut” RPG ruleset. It is a one-stop shop for helping you capture the feel of your favorite action movies, from Atomic Blonde to John Wick to Hot Fuzz. Now, the RPG sets its sights even broader. A new “genre book” expansion, Outgunned Adventure, promises to take you into the realm of pulp adventures.
Outgunned Adventure
In Outgunned Adventure, you take on the role of pulp heroes. And as you’ll see in the artwork, this RPG wears its influences on its sleeve in the best way. You can find visual inspiration from movies like the Indiana Jones series, as well as The Mummy, and even the more recent Jumanji.
But it’s not just a guide to capturing the genre. Outgunned Adventure is a core rulebook that stands on its own. You don’t even have to have the vanilla Outgunned to play. You’ll get all the basic rules for the Director’s Cut system within, plus all the guidelines for making your own pulp missions.
If you’ve never played Outgunned before, it’s surprisingly straightforward. You make small pools of d6s that you roll to try and get two-, three-, and four-of-a-kind while leaning into the character archetype you’re playing as. For instance, in Outgunned Adventure, you might play a character that fits into a pulp trope like:
- The Daredevil – Ex-soldier, Explorer,
Tomb RobberArchaeologist - The Captain – Sea Wolf, Aviator, Expedition Leader
- The Professor – Archaeologist (Legitimate), Librarian, Teacher
- The Star – Celebrity, Multimillionaire, Great Artist
- The Smuggler – Rogue, Thief, Counterfeiter
- The Technician – Mechanic, Demolition Expert, Engineer
- The Guardian – Protector of the Treasure, Bodyguard
- The Heart – Friendly Musician, Cook, Loyal Friend
- The Scoundrel – Cheat, Charlatan, Urchin
- The Hunter – Tracker, Guide, Big Game Hunter
Of course, it takes more than just character tropes to make an RPG. And in Outgunned Adventure, GMs will find a treasure trove of information on how to structure their adventures scene by scene. Take, for instance, the “Run” scene, pictured above. This is a take on those moments when something goes awry, and now the only thing to do is run. Run from the boulder. The enemy soldiers. The slowly collapsing pyramid.
Along with the mechanics of “RUN,” the book provides guidance on what happens if the heroes win or lose. It’s a reminder to keep the story moving forward, no matter what happens.
Alongside the new core rulebook, there’s a Mission Dossier (pre-gen adventure) called Fall of Atlantis, which can help you see what an Outgunned Adventure story might look like.
Time to go dig up a bunch of tea-stained world maps and red markers, I guess!
