40K: 8th Edition – Release Window?

i-want-to-believe

Warhammer 40k 8th Edition is rumored to launch this year – and that might be sooner than we think…

After doing some digging and comparing notes with the latest rumors and info we here at BoLS are ready to make an educated guess as to when the next edition of Warhammer 40k is going to make it’s appearance. But let’s walk through some of that information with you, dear reader, so we can all be on the same page.

First off, Spikey Bits is reporting the following important dates for GW store managers:

via Spikey Bits

  • February 18th & 25th.
  • April 1st & 8th.
  • May 6th & 20th.
  • June 3rd, 10th, & 17th.

These dates are days that the store managers are restricted from taking off because they are days when “New Products, Key Activities, Large Promotions, or a combination of all” will be available. Now, let’s cross reference some of those dates with what we saw from the Inner Circle North American event:

via Games Workshop

KEY DATES:
3/22/17 Inner Circle “Special Announcement”
5/13/17 Ritual of Judgement
5/13/17 In-Store Party
5/13/17 Announce store winners on Facebook
5/17/17 Final (5) Grand Prize winners announced on store Facebook pages at 4:30pm (central time)
6/3/17 Final (5) winners flown to Dallas for Inner Circle final celebration

Here are some other important dates as well:

  • March 13-17th – GAMA Trade Show. GW will be in attendance. This is typically a business-to-business event but last year they revealed Lost Patrol
  • March 22nd – GW will be making announcements at Adepticon 2017
  • May 28th  – End of GW Fiscal year. (Here’s their Fiscal Calendar) — This one is important!

Also relevant, let’s look at the past few years for edition changes:

  • May 2014 – Warhammer 40,000 7th Edition
  • July 2015 – Age of Sigmar
  • July 2016 – Age of Sigmar General’s Handbook

Looking at this information we can try to make some education guesses about what’s coming down the pipe – and possibly when Warhammer 8th edition will come out.

What we know for sure:

Now here’s where we get to speculating…

weirdalfoil_2322Tinfoil hats ready? Let’s do this!

We know that Games Workshop has a couple of projects/rumors floating around right now and one that keeps popping-up is the rumored Duardin release. We think that would probably be a good fit for late March/early April.

GeneralsHandbook 2

The Age of Sigmar General’s Handbook II has been getting worked on since before this past December. It would make sense that a release that important would be an “All-hands-on-Deck” type of release. That could still be a few months out depending on the type of feedback they get from the playtesting. Now, the last two AoS releases were in July, will they keep that trend up or will they bump it up to one of those April/May/June dates? We’ll have to wait and see.

reaver-8mmPlease be plastic…

Adeptus Titanicus is also slated for 2017. Here at BoLS this is one of those games we’re REALLY looking forward to. We’ve heard the rumors that they are trying to decide how to package this one…I’m personally hoping they go full plastic for the models, otherwise it’s going to have some major hurdles to overcome to become a viable game here in America. Ordering direct from Forge World can still be a roadblock for a lot of folks.

However, seeing as how we’re speculating – It would make sense for Games Workshop to want to put a risky release towards the end of May. They have had a really strong Fiscal Year thus far and if the Adeptus Titanicus is a slow burner it won’t have a huge negative impact on their End of Year report (the impact wouldn’t truly be felt immediately). And if it’s a hit, well, that will feed into the great year they’ve been having and help boost the start of the next.

Then again, if they are still trying to decide on how the packaging and layout will go this product might be pushed until the fall timeframe – again, same reasoning based on the fiscal calendar, only instead of impacting this years earnings, it would roll-over till next year.

40kGamersRulebook02_445x319

That brings us to the big question. When is 8th Edition launching? Well, based on these dates, the historical patter of releases and Games Workshop’s Fiscal Calendar we think those dates in June are going to be the best fit. Games Workshop has seen what happens when you kick your fiscal year off with a new flagship edition. Hopefully it’s a massive success for them and then that sets them up for having a great year.

But in case it’s a bit of a bomb, they can make-up ground with other releases and “right the ship” before the next mid-year financials (that date would be late December 2017/January 2018). Just like they did in a post-AoS world in 2015.

So which day in June? Well, they have blocked off 3 weekends in a row. June 3rd, Games Workshop will have just finalized their fiscal year that week (May 28th is a Sunday, June 3rd is that week’s Saturday). They are already planning a celebration that week as well. So maybe the Grand Prize winners will be in Dallas with some fantastically painted armies at a celebratory launch party for 40k – that would be pretty cool, right?!

ultramarine-let's party

Or maybe that’s just the announcement/preview of 8th and the actual release is the following weekend – June 10th. Who knows? (Well, GW obviously!)

So what do you think? If you had to guess, what day would you pick for the launch of Warhammer 40,000 8th Edition?

  • Justin Kemple

A guy at gw told me may 27th but that doesn’t match with your dates. Cpuld be pre order may 20th i suppose..Also one of my retailer friends said they just got their notice that 8th is coming out here pretty quickly…

  • Hendrik Booraem VI

I remember hearing these sorts of rumors last year from an actual GW store manager. So forgive me if I shrug and say “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

With the release of Kill Team, GW really provided an opportunity to develop the game into something that 8th edition can take advantage of. I’m fervently hoping that they keep Battle for Vedros as their entry-level game, and that the next edition ruleset comes in another 3-volume work like 7th. With the difference that 8th edition should have the three books broken up into Kill-Team (essentially the tutorial book), which covers movement, cover, shooting, and close combat, plus how to read the stats for a model and a weapon, Combat Patrol in the second book, which should cover unit coherency, unit morale checks, reserves, and vehicles, then finally Dawn of War (or some similar catchy name) in the third book, where they basically cover everything.

Yeah, all three books would have to have some re-duplication of stats, and some repeated USRs and stuff (like cover rules, for example), but the best part would be this: You could give the Kill Team book to a friend and get them hooked without losing your own ability to play games. You could loan the Combat Patrol book to ANOTHER friend and get three or four people hooked at once, and still have the rulebook for your large battles at hand.

This is what you call win-win-win.

    • Bigwebb

Sorry that is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard!! OUT

      • euansmith

Is it? Really? Have you been following the News? 😉

        • Tesq

what about 1 book (small ) just with rules with cost of 20 euro? seems less dumb to me

      • Loki Nahat

        UNLUCKY, that’s precisely what’s happening

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

What is more likely is GW will make a system that more easily scales down and up, like AoS.

    • dave long island

It’s fun and games loanin’ books out like the bookmobIle until you forget who’s got what. Good luck ever seein’ em again… lol… They’re gone like Brady’s jersey after the Superbowl…. lol

  • Nyyppä

Hoping for a good balance on top of working rules. See how I just dug the grave for my hopes there?

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

AoS has done well. I think GW could pull this off.

      • Nyyppä

        Death….

        • Parthis

          Generals Handbook 2.

Pointing at a weak faction while ignoring the mechanisms being put in place to make balance achievable, affordable and frequent in no way makes your argument.

          • Nyyppä

What would these mechanisms be, exactly?

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

            1. Updating the General’s Handbook (and thus the points for all units) on a yearly basis.
            2. FAQing regularly
            3. Maintaining contact with the public
            4. Hosting tournaments and broadcasting the results live
            5. A strong willingness to address problems and fix them ASAP.

          • Nyyppä

1 and 2 are done, 3 too in a way, 4 means nothing and 5th does not exist. Ironically 5th is the one thing that has to exist.

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

Actually 4 is very important because it means the designers, developers and community guys are at cons and tournaments seeing what is being played and how. They are outside of their local play group, talking with people and seeing what really is going on.

5th one clearly already exists for AoS.

          • Nyyppä

4 still does not lead in to changes to gain a better balance.
There is no evidence of 5th.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

Death just needs some fiddling with the mechanics of summoning and a new faction or two.

          • Nyyppä

I think that merely dropping the “may add models up to the original max of the unit” would do it.

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

It opens the door to a lot of problems, which is why summoning is such a conundrum.

          • Nyyppä

This is not summoning. There is a specific thing for death mass units that does that.

          • euansmith

Surely Death should have a mechanism based off gaining troops by killing the enemy and reanimating their corpses and binding their souls?

          • Xodis

            Now THIS would be awesome.

          • Dan Wilson

Well the zombies actually have an infected bite rule where they can turn enemy models into zombies finally! Seems bizarre that they didn’t have that in 8th.

          • Nyyppä

There is but it will never be enough and it’s zombies which are push over anyway. Even then your cap is what you bought.

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

There is little difference between adding models to a unit above and beyond what you paid for and summoning an entirely new unit that you did not pay for.

          • Nyyppä

Sure. The litthe difference is that on average the summoning brings 2,5-3,3 times as much models on than the the other mechanic.

        • Xodis

Destruction could use some more love too, but GW is seriously on the right track with AoS as far as rules go. Content is a different issue, but I think that is just a waiting game.

          • Nyyppä

Basic rules and GHB are fine. That is true.

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

February 18th and 25th – Pre-release and Release of the new Stormcast stuff (already up for pre-order in New Zealand)

April 1st & 8th: Probably General’s Handbook 2. This way it has 2 months to be the focus before we switch hard to 40k.

May 6th & 20th. Adeptus Titanticus A good way to slide it in at the end of the year and between two larger releases.

June 3rd, 10th, & 17th: This is totally 8th edition. Pre-Order on the 3rd, Release on the 10th, big army pre-release on the 10th, release on the 17th.

    • Agreed. GW notoriously releases new editions in the summer

    • TheMawr

I was thinking the june dates might indicate a wave of xenos releases and all the workers are required to stand against chaos player rioting they never get anything ? :p :p

  • Stealthbadger

    Only two things are certain:-

    1. There will be a space marine related release

    2. There will be epic whining because there has been a space marine related release.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

They deserve to be 1st. Then, hopefully, everyone else gets updated.

  • SilentPony

So wait, the contest is to buy models and whoever buys the most models wins?

    • kingcobra668

It’s a pretty small part of it. Drama queen. Read it all, digest it, then come back. If you don’t like it… don’t participate. I know, it’s really hard to comprehend. /s

      • Stealthbadger

Retailer comes up with plan to help retail of product.

        CAPITALIST PIG DOGS!

        • kingcobra668

          Seriously.

“Where’s my free stuff, waahhh, waahhh, waaaaahhhh.”

          • Nyyppä

More accurately “why all the pay to win attitude.”

      • SilentPony

I did little one. You get points for buying models. The more models you buy, the more points you get.

That shouldn’t have been too hard for you to comprehend.

        • kingcobra668

          Easy spaz,
What you can’t seem to comprehend is its a pretty small part. Not to mention your inability to read the entirety of my 4 sentence. Namely, the last one.

You are the definition of entitled.

          • SilentPony

Entitled for not buying models? Jeez, next you’ll be quoting inspirational posters about respect.

            By the way:
“believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment”

So…yeah…you really aren’t good at English are you? I never asked for special treatment. So I guess you’re just entirely wrong, on top of not knowing what words mean.

          • Stealthbadger

Just as an aside do you object to them using model sales as a factor though or are simply making the point?

        • Xenos Purgebringer

You dont get points for buying models.

You get points for completing models. I’ve got it in my hands. 4 points if you complete a unit/character after the 11th if bought at a gw, 2 points if bought elsewhere.

4 points if you complete painting a unit/character after the 11th from a gw, 2 points if bought elsewhere

This equates to having to buy more models right now if you’ve already finished everything you have.

    • No, it’s more like and paint the most.

  • EnTyme

I don’t feel like typing this again, so I’ll just copy+paste this from my post on DakkaDakka.

At this juncture, I would be more surprised to see Gathering Storm as the final campaign of 7th than I would be to see at least one more multi-part campaign and a late 2017 release of 8th. The original reliable rumormonger to mention a mid-2017 release for 8th (Sad Panda) has gone dark as of late, so it may be safe to assume his source is no longer talking and that information may no longer be accurate, and Lady Attia hasn’t given us much more than “it’s coming soon”. Four month is likely wishful thinking.

We know that GHB2 is coming sometime this year, and at least one, possibly two, major AoS faction releases are likely in the coming months. I doubt GW would want to release anything other than 40k within a month of 8th edition. They would run the risk of splitting their audience and reducing sales figures (investors only care about the early numbers, not long-term). I’m guessing we’ll see 8th in fiscal year Q2 (Aug-Oct) at the earliest.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

Release General’s handbook is April. Release 8th in June. 2 months between. Stuff a new low-risk box set game like Titanticus in between.

      • EnTyme

We know GW had some community members over to playtest some of the new GHB2 recently. Given the lead time for mass printing, an April release seems beyond optimistic.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

Probably true. You really need 3 months. June is looking good then.

    • euansmith

Sad Panda has gone dark? Time to call in Ethan Hunt!

    • TheMawr

Personally would say Oct makes sense. exactly 30 years after rogue trader. It hopefully means with all the AoS months they do continue the triumvates giving use 6 more beyond the initial 3. enough to cover Necron, Ork, Tyranids/GSC, Tau, Chaos (undivided), and possibly another Imperial one (altough Drukhari would be nice, its likely they see the GSII one as being enough for all eldar.)

  • dave long island

The only window we can be sure of is the only one that matters: 8th edition will be released sometime between now and the coming dystopian hellscape.

  • Roughneck

Anyone else immediately dismiss articles here when they quote themselves “spikeybits” as a source? When all they do is copy and paste the same articles between the two as they are the same website essentially.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

They are different websites. Rob runs Spikeybots, then is paid by BOLS to copy some of his articles (such as they are) over to BOLS.

      • Roughneck

Point still stands, hardly a reliable quote sighting when it’s the same author copying his link and article over into another site. Sloppy journalism which before people start this is as it’s always stated as hobby reporting and hobby news.
It just gives false credence to their wishlisting fanboy articles.

  • Christopher Witecki

Please be plastic? Please be in the right scale!

  • Graham Bartram

I have it from a 1000% bonafide reliable source from deep within the Games Workshop Hierarchy that 8th edition will ship at a date placed sometime after 7th and most likely sometime before 9th edition.

    • Nyyppä

      Woooooooooooooooooow!

      • Graham Bartram

        I’m amazed BOL’s hasn’t offered me a job yet. 😉

        • Nyyppä

Yeah. That’s the most accurate rumor they’ve had here…ever.

  • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

Of course now, the question is whether whatever manner of Space Marine Formation we get in GS3 will be worth fielding, and also how jarring of a change 8th will be.

  • MechBattler

“Could be tomorrow, or 10,000 years from now.”
“Well, thanks for the f*cking heads up!”
    – Robin Williams.

    • Loki Nahat

*shrug* well, at least he collected Orks, he’d be spinning in his grave about the idea of krorks

      • MechBattler

Would have been funny to hear him shout WAAAGH! at some point.

  • Davor Mackovic

So when is the actual 30th Anniversary date? I always thought that would be a great time to release a new edition on the anniversary date or close to it.

    • euansmith

Some time in October 1987; I was there, at Games Day, but I have no memory for dates.

  • Craig Cash

Given that we have dates for every month up until June makes me think this is simply because GW doesn’t advise their staff of these important days more than 4-5 months in advance, I’m sure there will be more of these dates surfacing through the rest of the year as well especially as we approach the gift giving season. If any of these were to be 8th I’d agree June seems the logical choice but that’s like saying if X movie/game comes out in the next 4 months it’s going to be June, it could very easily be later in the year.
