40K: Cypher’s Return Teaser

Games Workshop has some more hints for Cypher’s role in the Gathering Storm. He’s bringing Hope and Despair…but for whom?

On Sunday we had a rumor pop-up about the true identity of the “Fallen” Dark Angel Cypher. Today, we learned that he and Guilliman have another connection and some begrudging respect between them. Well now we have another hint at what Cypher is up to:

via Warhammer 40000 (Facebook)

“The pistols are named hope and despair? Which one is which, we wonder…

Cypher returns to the Imperium as part of the Triumvirate of the Primarch set this weekend.”

The 40k Webteam are being very tongue-in-cheek with that quote but it does make me wonder what Cypher calls his pistols…I would have gone with Truth & Justice…or Law & Order. Or I would have just called them Chuck & Norris.

Anyway, this is an interesting tidbit coming from none other than Luther, the man who discovered Primarch Lion El’Jonson. Luther claims, of course, that he is innocent of any betrayal and that the Lion will return to absolve him of any wrong doing. Now, if you haven’t been keeping up with the events of the Dark Angels and their homeworld, let’s just say things get a little fuzzy. There is some possible Time Travel and other Fallen involved. At this point, it’s really hard to say who’s version is right. Which brings us back to the man of the hour: Cypher.

Lord Cypher was originally a title that was given to a member of the Order of Caliban. To become Lord Cypher, the indiviual had to give up there previous name, cover their appearance and even forsake their personality. The last known person to be appointed as Lord Cypher was Zahariel who was given the title by Luther. Is the current Cypher Zahariel or Farith Redloss? How does he have this connection to Luther? And why is he heading to Terra with Guilliman now all this time?

The truth is coming. Anyone else getting pumped for Gathering Storm III: Rise of the Primarch? March can’t get here fast enough!

“I see one who is many”

So is there more than one Cypher? Kinda’ like Batman. Its a mantle people wear when the need arises.

    • It’s a title after all.

      • SilentPony

Well sure, but I mean rather than a title passed from one to another, it’s an identity multiple Dark Angels have at the same time. That the Cypher who wanted to go back in time and prevent the Fallen is different than the Cypher who instigated the Nova Terra wars, who is different than this Cypher, etc…

    • Or, he himself is a shard of the emperor. Maybe the shard concept will be GW’s way of bringing back the Sensei.

    • euansmith

I think they are just saying that Cypher is… dahn-dahn-daaaaahn… Alpha Legion!

      • The Angry Templar

Or it’s just Trazyn in disguise trying to add Papa Smurf to his collection.

    • Leif Leegard

Kinda. Cypher is a title as well as a name in the 30k Dark Angel ranks. It is a singular position, but the person who holds it gives up his past to become known as Cypher.

Think of ‘The Dread Pirate Robert’ from Princess Bride…

    • DeCold

      He is obviously Alpharius

  • Stefan Pazderka

Hope and Despair, weren’t they the twin sords the Lion occassionally used when he felt like he didn’t needed the Lion Sword?
Well I would be shocked if Cypher actually where either Zahariel, Holguin, Farith Redloss or even Corswain since none of them have been described as using pistols as their main weapons!
Zahariel has his custom sword made out of a slain great beast.
Holguin (Deathwing Leutenant in 30K) well he had a Terranic Greatsword.
Redloss giant Axe in form of an hourglass.
    Corswain another sword wielder.

    • euansmith

I don’t know why, but I found this very funny, “… giant Axe in form of an hourglass.”

      • Tshiva keln

The hourglass is the symbol of the Dreadwing which Redloss is voted lieutenant of so the axe is sort of a symbol of office.

    • Bradley Brittan

I’d say irrelevant as once the mantle of cypher is taken they drop their personalities, which one would presume would include weapons and preferences for such. At least that’s how I see it, I could be wrong of course 🙂

    • Steve L Duelist

Holguin’s great sword was the Lion’s blade if i am not mistaken

      • Stefan Pazderka

No he has his own sword.
But you are true The Lion entrusted Holguin to take care of the Lion sword (to dispose it) but Holgiun thought he meant to reforge it.

  • Randy Randalman

Such a well done update to the model.

    • vlad78

Maybe, I say maybe… this is your first post I can agree with. ;p

      • euansmith

        Careful now.

  • bfmusashi

Luther and Cypher are gonna smooch yo!

  • vlad78

Where does the Farith redloss rumour come from?

    • orionburn

Random internet dude. So, you know, that makes it true :p

    • Some Dakka user’s backside who likely mistook one character for another after reading Angels of Caliban.

  • What if Cypher is really Luther but from the future…

  • Harry (ノಠ ∩ಠ)

Getting really excited for this, hopefully there’ll be a set with just Cypher and some fallen angels

  • Walter Vining

the amount of good this is for chaos to have a true lord that they can take now.

  • Dexter Kingsford

    “Hope and despair”
Cypher being a champion of Tzeentch and Nurgle confirmed!

  • ChubToad

Anyone knows at what time are the pre-orders up on GW’s page?

  • Jim Collins

I just don’t like what they’ve done with Zahariel. The character introduced vs the current did not change slowly. I read it as some instant change from loyal to “let’s have some fun and wreck everything”.

This Faith Redloss rumor is weak if true and the hourglass thing is stupid.

  • Earl Tower

All I know is I am pumped to see my favorite 40K character get a new sculpt and lots of lovely new fluff attention.

  • DJ860

I always forget that Luther is still alive, it’s probably something to remember if they ever bring back The Lion as I assume it would then mean something has to happen with Luther too.

  • The14th

Isn’t that quote from the Cypher data-slate?
