GW: “Shadespire” Latest Details Emerge

GW’s Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire, has a new poster and more details on the way.

“A Fast-Paced Game of Tactical Arena Combat (Core Set)”

Games Workshop has a new poster to go along with the previous quick tease for a brand new game set in the mortal realms during the Age of Sigmar.

via Warhammer Community

Shadespire sounds like Games Workshop is branching out even further into board games utilizing their mini ranges.. This isn’t a Warhammer Age of Sigmar game, it’s part of a new line titled “Warhammer Underworlds” and it’s “designed specifically for competitive, organised(sic) play” from day one. Could this be a Mordheim revival? It very well could be – we just saw Games Workshop show off an updated Necromunda style game.

With its “core set’ label, we can assume this is the first in a line of these “Warhammer Underworlds” games, with several expansions coming behind it.  It also is labeled “A Fast Paced Game of Tactical Arena Combat” which combined with the image of a Stormcast hero fighting off several Khorne Bloodbound makes me think of last year’s Gorechosen. Remember it’s tagline “A Game of Brutal Arena Combat in the Age of Sigmar”.  It kind of has a familiar ring to it…

GW says they will be pulling the covers off this product with load of more detail at Adepticon 2017 next week and BoLS will be there to cover it.

What do you suppose this one is? Are we talking about a Mordheim reimagined in the Age of Sigmar, Gorechosen’s sequal, or something else entirely?

  • I’m getting so tired of the same pairing of pretty golden boys vs brutal blood-red dudes. Come on, they could’ve switched it up a bit. Warhammer Quest was a step in the right direction, and its not like Gorechosen doesn’t exist already, nevermind the endless starter sets..

    • DrunkCorgi

Yeah, when I hear “Underworlds”, I picture Kate Beckinsale in tight leather.

Hell, who am I kidding? I’m never NOT picturing Beckinsale in tight leather.

      • I don’t blame you. I can’t.

      • Honest Kairos

        I was thinking Skaven….. Jesus, I suck.

        • thatpirateguy

          Skaven in tight leather?

          • Honest Kairos

All I saw was leather! I didn’t know it was a Rat until… don’t judge me!

        • Dave Bacon

A Skaven Kate Beckinsale in tight leath….oh dear god, what have I done? I’ve destroyed something beautiful.

    • Alpharius

What makes you say this’ll just be stormcast vs khorne? This just looks like a poster and I doubt it’s really reflective of the entire game. I mean, there’s a stormcast eternal right on the front of the Silver Tower box art but the game’s hardly about stormcasts…

      • The poster is marketing for the game, the first impression of what it is going to be. Yes, there may be more to it than those two factions, but the simple fact that they use them to present this thing to us just rings warning bells.

The Silver Tower box art features most of the included heroes and enemies. Yes, the Stormcast is the center piece, but the rest are beside and behind him. Here, there’s a few khorne dudes battling the Stormcast. It is far more narrow in what it presents us with.

        • Alpharius

Of course, and I completely suspect that both Stormcast and Bloodbound will feature in whatever this new game is. However, Gw has explicitly said there will be new models in this, so unless you think these will be updated liberators and bloodreavers, it’s a safe bet that this artwork is not representative of the new game.

          • Frank Krifka

It’s probably an introduction to one of the heroes, with others getting their own posters in the lead up to the rollout.

      • Honest Kairos

That has to be the most Alpharius statement ever. “They may look like Stormcasts? But are they? Is it about Stormcasts? Who’s to say Stormcasts aren’t pawns in a larger game…. Perhaps a game about…the Grim Darkness of the 41st millennium? Just, food for thought….”

        • Alpharius

Lol. Who’s to say Warhammer Underworlds won’t include a plastic thunderhawk and SoB?

          • Honest Kairos

            And, a winner is you.

          • Darth Bumbles

I can say that it certainly won’t be a plastic Thunderhawk.

          • vlad78

What? Warhammer Underworlds will include a forgeworld Thunderhawk !!

          • euansmith

Wow, vlad78 confirmed the rumour! Plastic Thunderhawk inbound!

    • Randy Randalman

That’s just the start. The other factions will come into play based on the success of the product. Just like Blood Bowl.

      • euansmith

“If you build it, they will come.”

        • zeno666

If you buy it, more crap like this will be released 😉

          • ZeeLobby

But they’ll buy it. They always do. And as long as sales are better than the zero-supported fantasy, they’ll see it as a success.

  • Malisteen

    Another sigmarine/blood-bleeders set. yawn.

    • Alpharius

Another person judging a whole new game system of one poster. yawn.

      • vlad78

Usually it’s always the best part of AOS related game, given that this one is a bit mediocre with only stormcast (lookin like a SM) and khorne dudes, it’s totally understandable.

      • Brandon Rutter

yea they said new minis with this game, so are they really going to make new ones for these guys? Maybe, but seems like a missed opportunity.

    • Aezeal

Bloodbguys as opponents again bothers me. I can see the stormcasts as poster boys and the binding thread between the products… but why khorne again. New tzeentch stuff or if they want to use older stuff some nurgle guys would be better.

    • Emperor’s Champion

read the article before commenting. Warhammer underworlds, plural hinting at expansions for other factions just like blood bowl.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

But its another skirmish game, another arena game, another Stormcast vs Khorne game, another AoS setting game. I have to say, of all the possibilities this seems the least interesting.

        • Emperor’s Champion

They are two of the most popular armies in AoS, just be patient.

      • Malisteen

when and if those expansions actually show up, maybe then I’ll be interested.

  • Angry Panda

I would pick it up in a heartbeat if it’s similar to Necromunda’s focus on the usage of small squads and individual model progression. My Blood Warrior squad will have a hell of a time; if this is the case I would love to play this competitively.

  • Darth Bumbles

Hang on …Storncast can take off their helmets?
I thought they were sealed magically inside it like supernatural Cybermen.

    • Aezeal

Multiple sets have had helmet less head options for months now.

    • Ben Martin

I think it’s something along the lines of that Sigmarite is used to reconstruct their physical form, and then their soul is shoved back in. Probably incredibly painfully. They have internal organs and blood, so I’d say putting in the soul basically turns to sigmarite to flesh. I also used the think they were basically Cybermen too, but alas, well have to wait till they loose all personality to Nagash for that.

    • SWISSchris

I’m pretty sure this was the idea when they were first released but overtime helm-less models have been released I think as an attempt to make them a bit more relatable as the setting’s lead faction.

      • Xodis

It wasn’t. The first novel that came alongside the Starterbox had a Stormcast take off his helmet to speak with some frightened “runaway” slaves they rescued from Khorne warriors.

        • SWISSchris

Fair enough, I haven’t read the book but as someone who’s just been watching the releases I did wonder for some time whether there was flesh and blood inside those suits. Glad to know there is : )

  • Roughneck

Have to ask what’s arena combat got to do with Mordheim? They are complete opposites in terms of setting, theory and goals.
    BoLs with 2 +2 = 5 again

    • Parthis

It’s more like 2+2=NaN with BoLS these days.

      • Roughneck

Thing is they know what they are saying is wrong but want to create hype and conflict in the community. No wonder GW launched its community site.

        • orionburn

And then have a follow up article a few weeks later clearing up all the incorrect rumors that it helped start…lol

          • Roughneck

Got to get dem views in lol

    • Brandon Rutter

lets just be glad the article wasn’t titled “GW Returns to Mordheim?!”

      • Roughneck

That will be tomorrow’s which will be a summary of all the weeks articles

  • Sonic tooth

Khorne and stormcast. Again. No thanks.

  • Aezeal

Arena game doesn’t sound like mordheim

    • ZeeLobby

Yeah. Shame. Would have been cool to see more of AoS’s underbelly.

  • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

oh well that’s going to save me some money.

  • Fincas Khalmoril

Well, if they support it the same way they support AoS and I can use all my old models, this might be a win.

    • ZeeLobby

That’s exactly what it’ll be. And they’ll include stats for all those character models people don’t buy as well! Guess it works for playing with what you have though.

  • Beefcake the mighty

I just wish the old world got a 10th as much support as AoS does. But if people are enjoying it, more power to them.

    • ZeeLobby

Makes you think it might have succeeded. It’s a shame.

      • Hagwert

I think if Rountree had have been put in charge in say 2013 instead of 2015 he would never have scrapped the Old World setting , instead he would have brought out an AOS style set of rules for the boxed game and a hard back book for the ranked rules .

        • ZeeLobby

Yeah. Sadly they just did very little to keep up excitement. While 40K was getting all kinds of mini campaigns and releases. I think they also wanted fantasy to die so they could better protect the ip of whatever they replaced it with.

  • Juan Antonio

I think this is gonna drink from Arena Deathmatch. Make your gladiator or battle team and throw him/them into the arena.

  • bfmusashi

Dude on the cover’s telling me “help, my armor’s alive and threatening to behead me.”

  • ZeeLobby

Clearly a vehicle to unload more low selling characters for factions ala Gorechosen or Warhammer Quest beyond Silver Tower.

    • I like it. I was thinking about getting Gorechosen last year but hadn’t. Wonder if I should. I think all the characters in that game have WQ cards. I’ll have to check.

      • ZeeLobby

Yeah. It works for some. To me it’s just more shallow filler.

        • I’m just looking for some easy evenings entertainment. And the character models.
I’m finding way more interest in AoS WQ than I had expected I would have. It’s looking easier than dealing with a 40K game and a little more social.

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah. I can get that. I guess I just play enough games from other companies, and board games, that offer more story for less money and it’s hard for me to justify. But if you’re into just GW games, they’re your only alternative. And that’s not to say they’re bad, just weaker imo.

          • I don’t even really think of myself as a gamer really. Playing 40K more or less exclusively for 20 years. The only other games I really enjoyed are very out of print now with no local interest. I live too far from my local Game Shop to know what other games are being played or who’s playing what.

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah. It’s pretty crazy how big and popular the industry has gotten these days. So many fun systems to play, and most relatively cheap as well. Is truly an era of gaming.

    • Brandon Rutter

you mean outside the starter set?

      • ZeeLobby

Yeah. Silver tower was awesome. The expansion… Meh.

  • Fomorian

Iam really curious to see what GW has in it for us here. A competitive, tactical arena game sounds pretty fun to me :)!
I like the imagination of throwing al those cool AoS models into a pit fight and beat the heck out of them. Tournament play and league play with GW support and prizes, like FFG is doing would be awesome for that :)! Can’t wait to put a goblin, or skaven assassin into the arena, hm or maybe an Orruk warboss instead ^^! …

  • Is this maybe going to be the new Mordheim? since there is going to be a new Necromunda with new name…

    • Fomorian

No i don’t think so. BoLS is a bit condusing here, but as it shows on the poster, it reads “a fast-paced game of tactical arena combat”. This is something completely different Mordheim was :).

  • JL

Can’t say the poster tease has me excited. It’s actually not very good. We’ll see I guess.

What is up with that Khorne Blooddeathblooder’s axe?

  • Xodis

I was hoping they would bring other factions and models into Gorechosen, but this could work out too.

+1 for more Non-Helmeted Stormcast as well. Gives them more character.

  • Timotheus

The comic cover of a golden space marine is just a shame… -_-

  • FreshBumCheeks

    For demacia!
