GMM SHOWCASE: The Last Voyage of the Crusty Anchovy

GMM Shows off the most amazing tiki-Ogre army you’ll ever see in the Age of Sigmar!

“Ello, I wanna munch ya” is da thing to say

on a bright, humie huntin’ day.

Dat’s da island greeting dat we send ta you

From da land where fat guts sway

Here ya know yerr bones will be white and bright

Da sun will shine by day and the spit at night

“Ello, I wanna munch ya” is da Butcha’s way

to say get in my belly, to you!

Bon voyage and other well-preserved cheese to another project. A bunch of Alestorm, Kraken and late nights wrapped up in one final set of pictures. The customer wanted some tribal Ogres, a little bit realistic and menacing, a little bit silly, fitting for the inherent character of Ogres to begin with.

This project was especially fun and rewarding. A little bit nostalgic – a meeting of the Monty Python ogres and the Marienburger, and a whole lot of conversion just for the fun of it. Pretty much everything has sculpting, swaps, or is completely scratch such as the BSB.

Every project is always a big collaboration between myself and the customer. His dream, my ideas, and late nights emailing and brainstorming make an army as sentimental as the paint and glue work itself. A big thanks to him for coming along for the ride and being the poor wall I threw so many ideas at. End of the day this sort of sum of parts make for some of the most memorable work, and makes it all worth it.

Next in the pipe – an Age of Sigmar Khorne army big enough to rival the last Stormcast, and some interesting and new ideas for the backdrop. See you then.

~Give it up for Brandon at GMM! Amazing work!

  • euansmith

That is a very well converted and painted army. The Slaan-Ogre is a great idea. Nice water effects too; and the way that the box is made to look like some strange, extra-euclidean, folded draw is cool.

  • ZeeLobby

WOW. That is amazing. Such a cool take on Ogres.

  • vlad78

WFB bols, those are square bases.

    • ZeeLobby

sigh… one day people won’t even remember it. That’s just a sad thought.

    • Severius_Tolluck

No, it is for Kings of War, that is what the client Requested it for. It just so happens to be using WHFB models instead of mantic.

      • ZeeLobby

Kings of War seems more and more tempting every day :/

        • Severius_Tolluck

It has the same problems of AoS. It is uber generic, and also has set hit values as well. Plus it had most of the movement problems of 8th ed sadly. I just go back and play 6th with friends when we get the itch.

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah, it’s sad there’s no good alternative for the models. I actually really like the Runewars mechanics, but it’d be a pain to fit old models into those mechanics. Maybe going back is just the way to play. You like 6th the most? I’m trying to remember which was actually the best. I mean any of them seemed great compared to 8th, and I know post-3rd was when it got away from hero-hammer.

          • Severius_Tolluck

only major problem I had with 6th was the magic system with the hero batteries. So skinks could make a slann unstoppable. Other than that, the movement and tactics were pretty deep. Loved Lapping and all the flanking.

          • ZeeLobby

I’ll have to take another look at it. Mantic basically abandoned any armies that weren’t sold by them, so their skaven rules have basically fallen out of KoW (though still available), and my friend was desiring to put his ratmen back on the table. Have you tried 9th age?

          • Severius_Tolluck

Not in practicality, but I did read the rules. It has many of the major problems again I had with 8th. Which was lack of tactical depth, especially with maneuvering. Especially the closing the door bull crap that let weaker players wing it with their charges.

          • Muninwing

yeah, half the problem with 9th age is that 8th was so devolved from how the game had been.

had 9th age started with 6th as its template, not 8th, it would probably have taken off.

          • ZeeLobby

Hmm. That’s unfortunate. I can get my group to try 9th. I dunno if I can get them to go back to 6th. Half didn’t even play then.

          • CloakingDonkey

Honestly if you want something that plays faster than old WFB editions you’re probably better off creating a little fantasy addon for Hail Caesar or modding Dragon Rampant a bit. Kings of War is… very quickly very boring.

          • ZeeLobby

I mean we don’t want something necessarily faster, we liked the depth of older WHFB games. It’s just hard to get people to sign on to any systems that’s no longer active in public.

I will definitely take a look at both of those.

          • CloakingDonkey

Yeah I get that. I was more saying that KoW isn’t really worth it. It may be the obvious choice cause it’s a little more high profile but it’s really not very good long term… Everyone in my area got bored of it after a few months.

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah. I mean I had a feeling KoW wouldn’t stick all that well either. It’s not really the game we we’re looking for. Like you said it’s high profile, but it always seemed too shallow to me.

  • marxlives

Mind blowing with the amount of conversions and amazing paint job.

  • Talos2

Hopefully it’s not meant to be an armies on parade board as I don’t think gw will appreciate the titan forge stuff, but it is good

  • Carey_Mahoney

Extra awesomeness points for the title.

  • NikosanPrime

Extra impressive. Makes me want to hire you but somehow I suspect I can’t afford you. Plus, when I have the time, I am actually a pretty good painter and modeler.

But still I am tempted to pester you for a very special Marine project.
