Goatboy’s 40k Thoughts: Army Building

Goatboy here again – Today I want to just discuss some army builds for my Space Goats army. As soon as I read about the Space Wolves and the Thunderwolf cavalry unit, I knew I had to have an army with them. Now if you know me, I am not really into playing good guy armies. I just don’t find it very appealing modeling wise so I have to tweak things towards an evil bent. I guess I just find the options available to the bad guys to be cooler. So thus the idea for Space Goats came out of using Juggernauts as my Thunderwolves.

From this little thought I started to create my army and build them in my head. Here is the first model I created to see if this would actually work.

I went with red as it is a pretty bold color and decided to counter that by having white goats. I think it helps break the overall monotone look you see in a lot of evil armies as well as give me a chance to give this ghostly effect that some armies are lacking. We have all seen Big Red’s Death Guard army that utilizes white to a really nice effect. The main part of the model is the Juggernaut kit, mixed with a Chaos Marine legs, body and back pack. The head is from the beastmen kit and the arms are nob arms from the new nob kit from the Orks. I went with larger arms to give the model a mutatied “out of control” look.

Here are some of the other Juggers as well as the Wolf Lord with a “big choppa/frost axe” design.

The basic Grey Hunters I plan on using are going to be Chaos Marine/Khorne bezerker bodies mixed with ork arms and the beastmen heads. I should have a squad done in a few days as well as the Rune Priest I plan on using. I will be showing them off on my personal blog as well as some crazy Nob biker stuff and other commissioned work.

I have slowly been building up lists to figure out a way to play this army that will be both competitive as well as fun to play against. A lot of the times I can come up with a list that just comes out too strong to create a memorable game. Those lists are fine in a heavy tournament setting, but for the normal game you play week in and week out you don’t want to bring that type of list. I probably should test out lists before painting and building them, but I really don’t like having unpainted models on the table. It makes the game less fun for me and I feel I don’t get the true feeling of the game with grey guys on the tabletop.

Heavy: LRR, MM

This army is designed to hurt Orks. Between the large amount of armor 14 as well as high toughness monsters that can easily spread out to hit multiple squads, you have an army that will be painful for Orks to deal with. Eldar and the other finesse armies will have an easy time with this build too. It is the type of army that will let you finish a game in under an hour and a half and give you more then enough time to get something to eat. Will it be a fun army to play against? Probably as you have lots of dogs running around and all kinds of goat like nonsense you can spout as you move your big guys around.

This is a go for the throat type of list and is something that brings a rock style format to the metagame. The Fenris Wolves go in front of the Thunderwolves and will give them a 4+ cover save as you are shooting through a unit etc. I didn’t wound allocate the Thunderwolves as it really doesn’t help them as much as Nob bikerz are helped. You lose attacks and increase your cost in order to try and abuse the system.

Other ways to change up the army would be to drop the LR’s and go with either a foot style list with more Thunderwolfs or try out the scouts to create a sandwich effect on my army as the Juggers close with the enemy from the front, and the scouts from the rear. Of course this will take more testing and give me more options to create unique models on the table. I’ve seen some Logan lists floating around. The army might have to move towards that option to be really competitive. The idea of Lone Wolves are also appealing as they can do some funky things and give the opponent less then ideal options if left alone.
