The Art of War-hammer: Alaitoc Fire Prisms

“In battle, if you you make your opponent flinch, you have already won.”
Recently, Bigred asked me to paint a couple fire prisms he’d gotten to add to his large Alaitoc Eldar army.  He wanted to try and get close to his Wave Serpents that were already completed.  I’m always up for a challenge so I decided to do it.  I was a little overwhelmed at first, not really knowing how Alaitoc is supposed to look.  Other than having the Wave Serpent to base it off of.  I did some research and decided to not try to match the original exactly, but to put my own spin on it and make it look a little more random.
I decided to use a stippling of a number of blue tones over the entire model to create the Alaitoc blue camo effect, over a base color of dark blue.  I pressed the brush lighter as the colors increased in brightness.  I went back and did a few spots of black in random places as well.  Though the original I was giving had white “fins”, Bigred wanted yellow for the fire prisms to match his falcon.  I talked him into letting me do a mix of white and yellow to tie everything together and he agreed.  I did a blending from Iyandan Darksun, through progressively lighter shades of yellow to the white at the front.  I hand painted Alaitoc symbols on both hulls.

For the Prism itself, I wanted to use a red base as a contrasting color, but tie it in by brightening it up to orange and yellow.  I used a similar stippling technique, trying to keep the dots of color more uniform while having a higher number of them.  I used Mechrite Red as a base color and worked my way up from there.

The Prisms are 95% done at this point, I’m still waiting on the Shuriken Cannons from Bigred and I’ll be able to get them finished up.

~I have additional details as I progressed and have a number of other pictures over on bushido40k.  On a side note, mid-way through this project I had a bit of a disaster with my paints and had to replace about 75% of them.  I decided since I’d planned to switch to Vallejo paints anyway, that now was a good time.  Comments are welcome as always.
