Goatboy’s Figure Review – Mantic’s Undead Revenant Cavalry

3 Minute Read
Dec 6 2010

Goatboy here again throwing down with a Mantic miniature review. The people at Mantic were nice enough to send me their new Undead Revenant Knight Cavalry that is going to be coming out soon.  Lets check these guys out.

The good thing on these is thaty are in glorious resin. I don’t know about you, but seeing a company going away from metal is great because it will keep their costs low and give us some nice models that we can build and convert. Anyway onto the review.

As usual I will review the model from a Value, Look/Form, and finally Paintability. So without further ado lets get on with the show

Value

You get 10 models in this kit. A standard bearer, musician, and a champion model all come with this group and I feel the bonus of getting 10 models in one kit is pretty sweet. Especially if the cost is about the same as 5 models from other manufacturers. I think the designs for them are pretty good and the fact they are resin makes this a much easier set of models to put together, transport, and deal with. I do wish they had options for not all spears and had each model get a chance to fight with a sword and shield etc. I think that type of offering would make this a much more interesting kit. Also as these are not sprue based models you lose the ability to get more options and other random bits that Mantic is known for which brings the value of this kit down a little.

7 out of 10 – Wish we had more options but as these were originally metal kits it means an overall lack of options.

Look/Form

Mantic models can be hit or miss with the humanoid figure. I like a lot of their designs and find their Undead to be pretty neat as they feel more realistic in their proportions. It works in the undead and I think these guys look pretty good. There are a lot of little details in the armor design as well as the banner. The horses have this nice, fleshy Residential Evil look to them that is pretty neat and helps makes these models look different then the normal undead horses you see around and about. There are only two variations on the horses so you don’t have nearly as many options as normal Mantic sprue model kits.

7 out of 10 – The horses look good and I think the models overall have a nice feel. Again if there were more variations this kit would go up in rating.

Paintability

These models are pretty nice to paint. They have lots of forms that work well with washes. Also there are different texture types on here which allows you to break up model shape and design. Again I like the fleshy look of the horses and the Knights themselves look good with a very nice and simple armor design that looks like something an actual ancient civilization would make. So all in all I found them fun to paint and easy to work with.

8 out of 10 – The models were fun and easy to paint.

All in all these was a neat kit and something I hope Mantic does more of. Big squads with lots of options that lets you field one unit with one purchase, instead of having to 2 to 4 boxes to complete a unit.

The Revenant Knights are £25 for 10.  You can check them out yourself here. Goatboy out!
