Welcome to another installment of “This Week in 40K Podcasting,” – Here is this week’s top 5!

Highlights:  This week the boys take their first look at the new Tyranid Codex.  They kicked off the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they talked about the games they have been playing lately.  This included the GT that Neil ran last weekend, the NOVA survey results on how this year’s event will be run, and GW finical report.  In the community segment, Pat talked to Robert Mims from RTP Miniatures to discuss his new Kickstarter for a new low-cost model storage case.  They also discussed his Tau army converted to play as Orks.  Next, the boys discussed the new Tyranid Codex and their first impressions.  The guys had a hard time determining if this was indeed the worst Codex GW has ever produced, but everyone agreed it was just horrible.  They tried to find some high points, and outside of the Mawloc and the Exocrine being alright, the rest of the book is just bad.  They talked about the models removed from the codex, the overwhelming under power rules and special rules, and just how this book doesn’t stand up to any codex released in the last year plus.  They moved on to the Special Rules of the army, including the massive changes to the Instinctive Behavior rule, Synapse, Shadow of the Warp and more.  They then covered the Warlord Traits before moving on to the HQ choices, starting with the Hive Tyrant, the Psychic Powers, and the Bio-artifacts.  They closed out the show with some questions from their Facebook Fans!

Opinion:  This was a show I had been looking forward to since the release of the Tyranid Codex!  I was really intrigued by the interview with Robert from RPT Miniatures as I am always looking for more inexpensive miniature cases.  But for me the key to this show was the first part of their review of the Tyranid Codex.  Not sugar coated in any way, the guys gave a frank and honest look at how this codex just doesn’t stand up in the modern game.  I am really looking forward to the final part of this review.

Highlights:  This week is a massive 4 hour show completely dedicated to day one of the recent Caledonian Uprising 2014!  They opened up the show with Dave, Franco, Rob, and Josh discussing the basics behind the Caledonian Uprising tournament and what lists they decided to take to the event and the player/list they faced in round one.  This moved on to a turn by turn, round by round analysis of each of their first three games on day one.  It was loaded with tons of tactical decisions, strategies, and their thoughts on the game’s final outcome.  This was followed up when possible by an interview with their opponents.  They closed out the show with an interview with Luke Nurser, who was running a double Land Raider list and ended day one in a very high place.  He talked about the list in details and how it performed at the event.

Opinion:  The first major tournament in the UK has come and gone and the guys reviewed this event is a two part series!  I have always been a fan of these blow-by-blow reviews as they are loaded with tons of tips, tactics, and game play strategies.  I am interested to see how this all turns out as the scoring system there seems a bit different then I am used to.  Good show guys!

The Overlords – Episode 143 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the boys are joined by PowderFan and Teras from Geek Nation Tours and they opened up the show with the news and rumors.  This included the death of White Dwarf, GW Finical report, and more!  Next, the boys moved on to talk about their local news and updates, and what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby.  Then, the guys did their review of the new Tyranid Codex, starting with the quality of the art and feel of this book and a lot of the fluff found in the book.  Then then covered the army’s Special Rules, starting with Instinctive Behavior and moving on to Synapse, Shadow of the Warp and the Warlord Traits.  They then moved on to discuss the stand out HQ choices like Old One Eye and the Swarmlord.  The then discussed the Powers of the Hive Mind and the Psychic Powers list.  They moved on to the Elites like the Zoanthropes, Venomthropes, the Haruspex and much more.  They then covered the Troops choices like the Termagaunts, Warriors, Genestealers and more before moving on to the Fast Attack choices of the Gargoyles, the Harpy, and the Hive Crone.  The closed out the segment with a look at the Heavy Support choices like Biovores, Mawlocs, and the Exocrine and an overview of their feelings on the book.

Opinion:  If you are looking for a more ‘up beat’ look at the new Tyranid Codex, minus the competitive edge, this is where I would go!  The guys spent a lot of time looking into the fluff of the ‘Nids and how a hive fleet invades a world, which I really liked.  While I did think the guys glossed over some glaring holes in the codex, they did a great job of keeping a positive attitude towards something the internet is not pleased with.  Great work guys!

The Heroic 28s – Episode 86

Highlights:  This week the guys are joined by Leestone Lite and Happygrunt Alex and they opened up the show with some announcements and what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby.  This included Kenny’s tales of an RTT he attended and came out on top!  Next, the guys moved on to discuss the recent release of the GW Finical Reports and how they have dropped in sales and the stocks dropped 25%.  They discuss their thoughts on why this happened, what it means for our hobby and the impact of their recent decisions, and the long term implications to these numbers and changes.  Then, the guys discussed the GW Advent Calendar and all of the fun it brought us this year.  This included Dataslates and Formations and the rapid release schedule.  They covered each of the Dataslates released in detail; Be’lakor, the Tau Firebase Support Cadre, the Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing, Cypher and much more!  They also coverage Carnage and the Kill Team rules as well.

Opinion:  The guys hit on two real hot button issues in this week’s show.  First, one I do not think everyone is digging into deep enough is the finical state of GW and our game as a whole.  I really liked how they dug into the numbers and overall what it could mean for a game we all love.  Next, they detailed out the Dataslates that were released at Christmas.  This was good for those ones you did not hear the internet nerd-rage over and learn what they were all about.  Good show guys, looking forward to the Tyranid review!

Preferred Enemies – Episode 69 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the boys focused on a very important part of the game, the terrain!  They opened up the show with a brief news segment where they covered the new White Dwarf magazines, the GW finical reports and the new Tyranid Dataslates.  They also covered the Physic Power app woes and rumors like the Forgeworld/Black Library/GW merger and much more.  Next, it was on to the main topic of the show, the third player of the game, the terrain!   They start with the basics of terrain, the correct amount on the table and the importance of line of sight blocking terrain, and how the correct amount of terrain on the table can change the outcome of a game.  They also talked about some of the armies and weapons in the game that ignore cover and how this increased the importance of line of sight blocking terrain.  They moved on to talk about building and buying terrain; everything from straight up GW terrain kits, kit bashing to make those kits more interesting, Battlefield in a Box, and loads of ideas for creating your own terrain.  They also talked a little about the Forgeworld ‘Realm of Battle’ tiles that are available.  They closed out the show by discussing their hobby progress and some games played.

Opinion:  What a great way to end the week then with a show that talks about that all import terrain on the game table.  All too often I see terrain that simply wasn’t designed for this edition of the game on the table and the guys did a great job of pointing out how to update that game table.  I couldn’t recommend this one enough, as there is a lot of great advice in here.  Great show guys!
