Welcome to another installment of “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”

Here is this week’s top 5!

Highlights:  This week it is a bit of a short crew, with Neil, Pat, Larry, Eric and Allan, and they opened up the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they talked about the games they have been playing.  Then, in ‘Pat’s Corner’ Pat had an interview with Rob Medley who took his Necrons to the Caledonian Uprising 2014 and did quite well there.  They broke down his list and what counters he has for all of the ‘deathstars’ floating around out there, and how he feels about 6th Edition over and his thoughts on the Tyranid Codex.  Pat then talked to Gant from the Ice House Warriors club and they discussed the Delawarr Open 2014, a NOVA Open qualifier!  Next, in ‘Tournament Talk’, Neil and the gang hit on a lot of the hot button topics in the competitive circuit.  They covered the concept of a ‘Highlander’ list or comp format for GTs, and how this worked out at the Caledonian Uprising 2014.  They also talked about how the 6th Edition missions were written and can be abused, some new mission ideas they have had, and much more.  In ‘Mind War’ Eric discussed how to manage your emotional state when doing poorly in a tournament.  They then moved on to part three of their review of Codex Tyranids, starting off with their thoughts on why the book is so bad, how Synapse has crippled the small bugs, and that ‘Nidzilla may be making a comeback.  Allan talked about the list he was taking to the LVO, which was dripping with MCs, and some tactics he plans to use.  They then picked up on their review with Zoanthropes, Venomthropes, Haruspex, and more.  They then highlighted the Fast Attacks, touching on the Gargoyles, Harpies, Hive Crones, and they rest are terrible and it was on to the Heavy Support.  They covered the Carnifex, the Exocrine, the Trygon, the Mawloc and more.  They closed out the segment by discussing some barely competitive builds they could find in the book.  In the community segment, Pat Talked to Chip from Torrent of Fire where they discussed what is going on over at Torrent of Fire.  He also talked to Jon from Battle Scribe and discussed his product.  They closed out the show by answering some questions from their Facebook Fans.

Opinion:  This show was just full of great topics this week.  First I was really looking forward to the conclusion of their Tyranid Codex review, and I happen to fall on their side of this Codex being amazingly underpowered.  The interview with Rob Medley was informative, the concept of a Highlander event very intriguing, and the conversation with Chip from Torrent of Fire was great.  Overall, an amazing show, easily my favorite for the week!

Highlights:  This week the boys get all riled up over the new Tyranid Codex!  This week Kenny is joined by James, Chumby, and Matt and they kicked off the show with some announcements.  They then moved on to games played and hobby progress.  Next, it was on to their review of Codex Tyranids, and they started with their ‘one-word’ descriptions of the book.  They also discussed what the book lost from the last one and what they gained before covering the Special Rules of the army; Synapse, Instinctive Behavior, and Show in the Warp.  They also hit on the Warlord Traits, the Psychic Powers, and the Bio-Artifacts.  They then moved on to a unit-by-unit review, starting in the HQ slot with the Hive Tyrant, and moved on to the Swarmlord, Tyrant Guard, the Tervigon, Primes, Old One Eye, and Deathleaper.  They closed out the show by covering the Troop choices, starting with Warriors and moving on to Genestealers, Termagants, Hormagaunts, and Ripper Swarms.

Opinion:  I was really looking forward to Kenny’s thoughts on the new Tyranid Codex, and while there still was some nay-saying (and with this book who can blame them), overall this was a really good look at the new book.  I am really looking forward to part two of the review.  On a side note, looking forward to the X-Wing show, we need a dedicated X-Wing podcast!

Highlights:  This week the boys are taking a look at Escalation and its impact on the game.  They opened up the show with BJ and Franco talking about the upcoming ‘Walking Weird Boyz’ event BJ will be attending and how it will be allowing Escalation and Forgeworld models.  They talked about the current meta and how it has shifted to the top units in the game versus the top army.  Then then discussed the army Franco plans to take to the event and his concerns with the format and some tactics to take on the scary units out there.  Then, on the ‘Q&A-Team’, Dave ran solo with answering some questions from their fans, which involved a lot of tactical discussion.  Up next was the ‘Tournament Report’ where BJ and Franco talked about the ‘Walking Weird Boyz’ event that BJ attended.  They talked about this Escalation event, the format, missions, the list that Franco took, and a brief round-by-round review of Franco’s games.  This included Franco’s first experience with a Revenant Titan and a Transcendent C’Tan!  Franco did well and placed very well at the event, and he shared his thoughts on the impact of Escalation in competitive events.

Opinion:  This was a really interesting show, and all of the Escalation talk was quite fascinating from a competitive angle.  I was really locked in to Franco’s review of the event and how powerful the Revenant and Transcendent C’Tan really are.  I have been on the side of the fence where Escalation has no place in the competitive circuit and this helped to prove my point.  Great show guys!

Preferred Enemies – Episode 70 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week’s topic is an oldie but goodie, ‘What if we ran GW!’  They opened up the show by discussing the Escalation event that they recently ran.  They moved on to some news where they reviewed the new White Dwarf and Visions and would they would like to see come from these magazines.  Then, it was on to the main topic for the show, ‘What if they were running GW, what would they do?’  It is clear that they need some help and they offered up some great ideas!  This included the job posting from GW looking for assistance to help out their stores, lower cost starter kits, for god-sakes give the community some way to engage them and help point out mistakes, fixing Fantasy, helping the FLGS to get more people into the stores, and much more!  They closed out the show with their hobby progress report.

Opinion: This was a very interesting topic and I found the whole show quite fascinating.  I will note however that they guys did not delve into the gutter of rules changes, price changes, codex fixes as most of us would have on this topic.  They really did take it as a business-like approach as to how to help this company turn a corner and succeed over the next few years.  Great shows guys!

The Overlords – Episode 144 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week, Jon, Johnny, and Jason are joined by Ciaran  and they opened up the show with the news, which included Space Hulk on Linux, the latest from Forgeworld, the Dwarf release through White Dwarf Weekly and Visions, and some local news and announcements.  Next, Jason had an interview with Steve to discuss what they have been up to lately at their gaming club, including an Escalation League, their terrain building night, and more.  In the next segment, the guys took a look back at each of their personal years of 2013.  This included Jon’s trip to Japan, Salute 2013 w/Carl Tuttle, Warhammer World visit, the Baddab Campaign, Jason’s marriage, and much more.  They moved on to talk abbot what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby.  Then, they moved on to talk about the new Tyranid Codex and Jonny and Ciaran discuss what they have learned with their early experiences.  This included the power of Shadow of the Warp, the Monstrous Creatures being quite points efficient, the strengths of the Flying Hive Tyrant, and the weaknesses the book clearly has.  They then ran down some list idea they have been playing with and how they hope they will perform.  They closed out the show with a discussion about the GW company line, ‘We are a model company, not a rules company’.  First, why are not more resources at GW dedicated to the rules?  Do the rules effect the game and the sales of models?

Opinion:  Any show where Steve makes an appearance is a welcome show for me, happy to hear from you man!  I did like their brief look at the year of 2013, but I much more preferred Ciaran’s thoughts on the new Tyranid Codex.  I do wish hit thought were more tabletop experience then theory-hammer, but I am sure that is coming.  Good show guys!
