We’ve got new Commanders in transit from orbit, ready to make their presence known on the battlefields of the not-too-distant future!

As a die-hard Dropzone player, this release has me extremely excited. Each faction is looking at a new Commander model. This will add loads of diversity to the burgeoning game, both in terms of how you can construct your army and what you will face on the table.

In our post-game discussions, the group of players I meet with will often talk about what can be done to enhance the experience of the games we play. One of our favorite ideas in Dropzone Commander has always been the expansion of Command vehicles. While it was nice to see the named Commanders in Reconquest: Phase I, those aren’t exactly intended for every game you play. They bring incredibly powerful rules and shift the fundamentals of how your force functions on the table, so they are more for narrative campaigns and friendly weekend brawls. These were still nice to see, but we still longed to see additional Command vehicles that allowed variant approaches for each Faction.

Now, we have them! To add to the awesome nature of more options in general, these Commanders seem particularly suited to fulfilling battlefield roles that are opposite to their predecessors. For example, the UCM Kodiak was designed to sit in the backfield and unload ordnance from a safe distance. The new Phoenix, however, seems hell-bent on getting stuck into the thick of it, commanding from the front and unleashing brutal firepower on the opponent.

For now, Hawk has not released full background or experimental rules, though they have released a nice series of teasers, describing the weapons loadouts and preferred fighting styles of each of the models. It’s easy to guess the broad roles these models will fulfill within the force, and it opens up some immediate options to reconfigure your forces.

From the massive Phoenix Command Gunship to the indomitable Nemesis Command Walker, each faction has a very unique addition headed their way. Preorders are available for these items now, with a street release date of March 28th.

What do you think, Dropzone fans? Are these models going to stir the pot? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
