It looks like Games Workshop is sending out retailer kits for Burning of Prospero – and the have an interesting surprise inside…
Games Workshop isn’t just reaching back in the lore to pull surprises out of the upcoming Burning of Prospero – they are also reaching all the way back to their game play mechanic roots as well because the new game will also feature D12 dice. It’s the return of other Polyhedral Dice to Warhammer!

“The important news is that it is NOT an expansion to Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth. Rules and mechanics are different.”
“The shops will also receive the following items to distribute as the please:
Art cards – 8 sets
Pin Badges (Ahriman, Geigor) – 70 (35 each)
D12 dice for Space Wolves
D12 dice for Thousand Sons”
Grot Orderly is also reporting that the 24 dice in the Burning of Prospero set are D6s, D8s, D10s, and D12s.
Taking a closer look at the picture above you can pretty clearly see that those aren’t just D6s in the box:
We haven’t seen dice besides the D6 used in Warhammer 40,000 since 2nd edition. Now we have confirmation that this is a stand alone game. It’s certainly not an expansion to Betrayal at Calth, at least mechanically. Perhaps Games Workshop will make rules so players can at least use the models in the different games because players will absolutely use the models in games of 40k/30k.
Personally, I’m now even more excited about this as a new “Board Game” than I was before. Betrayal at Calth was good fun and Overkill was a blast to play. With the addition of different dice for this game, I’m now very curious for this game because of the mechanics. I also happen to like having different Dice Sets…I really wish they had included D4’s and D20s. That would have sold me right there!
Warhammer 40,000 may not be moving away from the D6s, but Games Workshop is certainly experimenting with more Dice now – and that’s a very good thing for their board games!
I’d totally purchase faction specific Polyhedral Dice Sets for my favorite factions. I already buy bricks of D6 sets for my armies…
