In order to understand what’s happening with the Stormvaults and how they propel the story forward, first we must all go back. The Stormvaults were ancient repositories for all manner of wonders from the Age of Myth.

Before Chaos, before the Stormcast Eternals, there was the Age of Myth – a time of adventure, exploration and conquest, when gods walked the Mortal Realms and built wonders beyond human comprehension. The Age of Myth may have been a time of prosperity, but it was also a time of epic conflict that saw battles between creatures of godlike power and the forging of weapons of incredible potency.

But as Sigmar’s Order united the Mortal Realms, these godlike weapons and beings became more of a danger than not. So Sigmar decided to seal them away, but in order to do so, Sigmar had to betray one of his closest allies, Teclis.

During the Age of Myth, the aelven god Teclis sought to share wisdom and knowledge with Sigmar and his subjects. To do this, he built magical devices known as Enlightenment Engines, machines imbued with a portion of Teclis’s own knowledge that opened the minds of all nearby to the mysteries of the universe.

After centuries of study, Sigmar’s arcane experts discovered that the Enlightenment Engines could be inverted, clouding the minds of those nearby rather than opening them. Working with the smith-god Grungni – who was more than happy to subvert the work of his rival – Sigmar remade the Enlightenment Engines as Penumbral Engines, devices with the power to magically obscure and conceal.

Using the sacrificed spirits of willing volunteers and unwilling adversaries to fuel these magical creations, the Penumbral Engines began their secretive work, hiding away artefacts–and beings–of unimaginable power from any prying mind. Even Sigmar doesn’t know the location of all the Stormvaults any longer. And now that the Necroquake has unleashed a storm of wild magic on the Realms, the Stormvaults are failing. Some are small vaults holding a single item, some are city-sized vaults locking away all manner of wonders.

The one thing that’s clear is now ancient power–and ancient evil–is being unleashed on the Mortal Realms…
