Geekery: ‘The Boys’ – Pep Talks Are Difficult and Filled with Profanity

In the latest trailer for the show, based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s book, the Butcher proves he doesn’t really have a way with words.

The series is premiering on Amazon Prime Video next month with the help of the producers behind Preacher. The eight-episode season tackles the often gross, always violent, and delightfully crude stories of a superpowered CIA squad known internally as The Boys. The group puts the superheroes of their world – who are corrupted by fame and power  – back in their respective places. It’s got all the hallmarks of Ennis’ world building and writing.

The latest NSFW trailer takes some inspiration from one of the greatest girl groups of all time.

I’m liking what I see. The creative team (and Amazon) are obviously not scared of the source material and are not pulling punches. It’s definitely aims at a more adult audience that digs dark humor, and could provide folks that have superhero burnout (or just are annoyed by the concept all together) some catharsis.

The cast is led by Karl Urban as Billy Butcher with Jack Quaid as Hughie, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Tomer Capon as the Frenchman, and Karen Fukuhara as the Female of the Species. Simon Pegg makes an appearance as Hughie’s dad – fitting because Hugie’s look in the comics is intentionally based on him.

The Boys premieres on Amazon Prime on July 26.
