Beastgrave will introduce three (and hopefully more) new and characterful warbands to the game. Here’s what I hope they bring to the tabletop.

Next week, the new Underworlds expansion Beastgrave will be dropping, and the warbands will be making their way to the feral realm of Ghur. In addition to new challenges and strategies, Beastgrave will introduce three (and hopefully more) new and characterful warbands to the game. Here are some of my initial thoughts, and what I hope they bring to the table.

Grashrak’s Despoilers

First out of the gate, you can’t have a game called Beastgrave without bringing in the Beastmen, and Grashrak’s Despoilers fit the bill perfectly. Led by the titular Grashrak, a Bray-Shaman, the warband also contains a Gor, two Ungors with spears, and two Ungor Raiders with a shortbow. Since the leader is a wizard, I am guessing that he will have some decent support capabilities, but being that he is also a Beastman, I imagine that he will have a gnarly damage spell or debuff mixed up in his kit too. The Gor will definitely be the bruiser, and the Ungors will probably be fodder, either for Grashrak’s magic or as meatshields and cheap damage. Either way they seem like a ton of fun, so I hope to see a few running around in the future.

Skaeth’s Wild Hunt

From the first second I saw these guys back when they were previewed I have been 1000% onboard. Their design, their origins, and the fact that they brought a lion to the battlefield all really resonated with me. I am a huge fan of the Centaur and Faun elves, and I was honestly hoping when they were previewed that they were just the first wave of a brand new Order army to supplement or replace the Wanderers (to be honest, I still am). I can definitely tell that this will be a very fast warband, and one focused on maneuverability, range, and board control. They will likely outpace most of the current warbands, and will hopefully have tons of movement shenanigans to get them around the board in keeping with their animalistic look. Here’s hoping we’ll see more like them in the future, and that their warband becomes a top contender in Beastgrave.

Rippa’s Snarlfangs

Back in the world that was, Goblin Wolf Riders were a powerful addition to the Orcs and Goblins army, and could serve as fast but still reasonably tough fast cavalry. Sadly, when the Gloomspite Gitz made their way into AoS, they didn’t bring the wolf boys with them, so it made me very happy to see their return, albeit in a smaller format. The Snarlfangs are a fairly small warband, but that makes sense considering they’re all riding wolves, which I suppose actually doubles their warriors. I do hope that the wolves will get their own attacks, and I imagine that being mounted will give this warband a huge movement advantage over most of the others. The models look great, much more dynamic than previous incarnations of the Wolf Riders, and as above it gives me hope for a possible update. I can see this warband performing as a sort of shock army, getting stuck in fast, hitting hard, and backing out again. I’m excited to see how they turn out and what sorts of new cards they will have for the game.

What are your thoughts on the new warbands?
