D&D’s White Whale – A Movie That’s Actually Good

For all that Dungeons and Dragons is a game that sparks the imagination and adventure, the one thing it cannot spark is a good movie. Where did it all go wrong?

Hollywood and Dungeons & Dragons have a storied relationship, in much the same way that Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have a storied relationship. When you first think about it, you guess it sort of makes sense, but then you're secretly relieved when the whole thing only lasts about six months.

The only difference is that at the end of one of these rocky relationships we have one of the best break-up hits of all time, and the other leaves you with this.

And no disrespect to Mr. Irons, he is clearly making the best of a bad situation and chewing a heroic amount of scenery chewing would see him take one of the lead villain roles all the way to box office fame and fortune. But look at this face.

That is the face of a man who understands exactly what kind of movie he's in, and knows full well that the movie is going to bomb, but he is damn well going to try his best to carry the movie, giving the script exactly the amount of weight and respect it deserves....
