Goatboy’s 40K: How Much Does Psychic Awakening Matter?

Goatboy here and I want to know just how important Psychic Awakening is going to be for 40K?

I won’t lie – this whole social distancing has really gotten me missing throwing dice around.  I know a lot of buddies are playing TTS but those aren’t my models so there is less of a desire to push digital representations.  I also feel like if I was playing digitally – there would be more done for me.  If I get a computer to do the work I want more automated.  That is just me so instead of playing I am just sitting here filling out armies, finishing some commissions, and keep waiting for 9th edition to get talked about.

This has me thinking though – does all the psychic awakening stuff matter?  Is this going to be another “world” blow up and all the rules, units, and bits and pieces just won’t be usable when the new rules come to dominate our table tops?  I am all for a new refreshed edition but I worry that the tricks and bits we all like from the new rules (except those poor GSC) won’t be there to comfort us as we travel the new rules and ways of 9th edition.  Thus the next 3 books (Engine Wars, War of the Spyder, Pariah) might be more more short-term filler filler than killer and I miss the chance to run the tables with my left over woken armies. Just think of the short lifespans of the Rise Of the Primarch rules from the tail end of 7th Edition.

Through the Looking Glass

Flip this around and do we want a fully new edition where the old ways are broken away and we have new things to refresh and work with?  I am not sure.  There is still a lot of 8th I like beyond some of the weird broken stuff.  Heck I have heard many a player getting frustrated with how good an Iron Warriors Lord of Skulls can be.  Tabletop Simulator seems to be helping in allowing players to mess with weird units, expensive models, and odd army builds so maybe it will do a neat job of breaking up the meta till we have to rethink the whole thing again.  Or will just have to deal with another batch of armies that seem to be good for specific formats instead of good for the game.

I Have Many Questions

What do you guys think?  Are you still excited about the new rules maybe coming in a few weeks?  I know this Grey Knight army I am painting is hoping to still be viable when 9th hits and I would love to play my Lord of Skulls again.  Are there too many mistakes in the current game with multiple books/rules/pieces you need to get a competitive army working?  Are we hoping the next set of codexes are remixed with their Psychic Awakening stuff and tweaked 9th edition thoughts?

That is one HELL of a miniature!

Also what happens with all this built up stuff when everything starts up again? Does GW just release them all when they can open up shop again?  Do I just switch to AoS cuz they got Giants and I love me small model count armies?  Why am I painting more Dreadnoughts (Helbrutes) when I don’t know what will happen?  Is there a way the new edition will let me play more than 3 Daemon Princes?

I won’t lie this forced isolation has been hard on me due to being what is commonly known as an Extrovert.  Heck a lot of my other extroverted wargamers are also feeling this kinda of lost vibe as we try to figure what we need to do.  I am lucky that I love the hobby aspects as much as the game/social interaction so at least I have something to focus on.  On top of having a wonderful wife and two friggin monster kids (Chatty McChatty and Mumbles the Klepto) helping me keep chugging along.

Helbrute is my safeword.

Hobbying It Up!

In the next few weeks I will probably talk about what I hope we see in the next few books and 9th edition.  I have tried not to focus too much on it as I felt we would have awhile before we could get ahold of them and didn’t want to get too forlorn as I wait. With that in mind will see more hobby stuff with paint, conversions, and personal miniature nonsense.  I might throw out some cool art things as I look to keep myself busy these next few weeks as I hope I have enough metallic paint and Dark Tone to use.

What are you guys working on?  What things are you hoping for from GW? Who else needs a haircut?
